DE-CIX New York is growing, we are close to 200 connected networks! Due to the ongoing growth, we have to change to a new IP network.
DE-CIX New York’s peering LAN currently uses a /24 netmask which contains 254 IPv4 addresses. Each peering member at DE-CIX New York gets one of these IP addresses, and we now have only 27 addresses left. With our current expected growth rate, the addresses will last about five or six more months. Therefore, we have to change to a larger network. To accommodate more connected routers, we have to get a new /22 network.
In Frankfurt, we had the luxury that the network we used for the peering LAN was part of a much larger network which also belongs to DE-CIX. So we only had to move a few addresses around and could extend the network from a /22 to a /21. When we opened DE-CIX New York back in 2013, it was not possible to get such a large network, as IPv4 addresses had already run out. We only got a /24. As an Internet Exchange, being critical infrastructure, we are able to get more addresses if we prove we need them; and with our current growth, we had the proof we needed to get a new /22 network. But it is not adjacent to our current one: we will get a completely new /22 network. All customers will have to renumber their IPv4 interface connecting to the New York peering LAN. Afterwards, we will give back the old /24.
The change will take place over three days at the end of January 2019. More details have been shared with the DE-CIX New York customers via our mailing lists, and an extensive FAQ is available in the DE-CIX customer portal.
