With election season approaching, plenty of candidates eager to share their message will be putting up campaign signs. But before you dig, know what’s below. Protecting yourself from striking buried utility lines is as simple as dialing 811.
Florida law requires dialing 811 before doing any digging. Sunshine State One Call will get utility companies to locate and mark buried lines. The law requires you to call two full business days before digging. “We really encourage people to follow the law and call before digging. We would hate to see a candidate knock out service to the same folks he’s hoping to serve” said Brian Hamman, CenturyLink’s Manager of Market Development.
Striking a buried line could cause a service outage, personal injury or property damage. It could also lead to fines of $250 up to $5,000 plus repair costs. Beginning October 1, 2010 the fines increase to a range of $500 to $50,000. You can visit http://www.callsunshine.com for more information.
