Light Reading Names Cyan’s Blue Planet SDN Platform “Best New Telecom Product”
October 2, 2013
Cyan (NYSE: CYNI), a leading provider of software-defined networking (SDN) and packet-optical solutions for network operators, today announced that its Blue Planet SDN Platform has been named “Best New Telecom Product” by Light Reading at its annual Leading Lights Event in New York City last night. The Leading Lights program recognizes innovative companies and products that signal the direction of technology advances and have demonstrated significant traction in the market.
Cyan announced its Blue Planet SDN Platform at the 2012 Light Reading Ethernet Expo last November, where it was also named “Private Company of the Year” during the Leading Lights Awards. Since then, more than 85 customers around the world have implemented Blue Planet, with key customer deployments at NTT Communications, GlobalConnect, KVH and many others including one of the largest web franchises in the world.
Other key Blue Planet milestones in 2013 include:
- At Interop Tokyo in June 2013, Cyan conducted a live multi-vendor SDN use case demonstration using the Cyan Blue Planet SDN system to show unified, end-to-end orchestration of cloud, data center, and WAN services all from an enterprise portal.
- Cyan launched the Blue Orbit SDN ecosystem with partners Accedian, Arista, Boundary, Canonical, Embrane, Overture and Ryu. Recent additions include Pica8 and RAD.
- Cyan released Planet Inventory, an app that provides inventory reporting for multi-layer, multi-vendor packet-optical networks. The app supports integration with existing inventory systems via RESTful northbound APIs.
“While most SDN innovation to date has occurred inside the data center, Cyan’s Blue Planet is the first carrier-grade SDN platform built specifically for network operators and the WAN,” says Joe Cumello, chief marketing officer at Cyan. “We are honored to be named Best New Telecom Product by Light Reading. It’s a major touchstone for our company, further validating our innovation and industry impact.”

Cyan’s Blue Planet SDN Platform was launched in November 2012 and is the first carrier-grade SDN and NFV orchestration solution built specifically for network operators. The platform is designed to address the pain points network operators are facing by simplifying the deployment and orchestration of business applications and network services over high-performance networks. Because of its unique ability to manage third-party network equipment and applications, Blue Planet enables customers to make far more efficient use of existing assets, cost-effectively expand capacity and significantly accelerate the delivery of premium, revenue-generating services to end-users.
