Rigorous carbon reduction accreditation helps achieve top 5% position
TelecityGroup, Europe’s industry-leading provider of premium carrier-neutral data centres, has become the first data centre provider to be recertified for the Carbon Trust Standard in the UK, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to maximising the carbon efficiency of its operations.
As part of the recertification process TelecityGroup demonstrated how it had made significant improvements to its carbon efficiency, achieving a 13.5 percent reduction over the assessed period , benchmarked against revenue. The Carbon Trust Standard’s benchmarking report ranked TelecityGroup in the top five percent of certified companies in the “Software & Computer Services” sector for its carbon management performance, and within the top ten percent of certified companies overall.
TelecityGroup has also been recognised for committing to year-on-year efficiency improvements, including the publication of a five year target for its environmental impact based on the CUE (carbon usage effectiveness) metric. CUE captures a combined picture of the energy efficiency of operations and the carbon intensity of the energy used, encouraging individual data centres to improve the efficiency of their systems and seek out low carbon sources of energy.
Michael Tobin, CEO of TelecityGroup, said: “We are committed to driving environmental best practice in the industry, which was demonstrated when we became the first data centre provider to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard in 2009. Since then, we have further intensified our efforts within our Energy Management Programme, combining investment and proactive management to ensure we can accurately measure and significantly reduce our carbon emissions on an ongoing basis. We are delighted this work has been recognised by recertification with the Carbon Trust Standard.”
TelecityGroup’s Energy Management Programme is designed around the ISO 14001 international environmental management standard and the implementation of the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres’ best practices. It enables TelecityGroup to identify and manage its environmental impact; improve performance and control; and ensure that continual improvement mechanisms are in place.
The Carbon Trust Standard is one of the world’s leading certifiers of carbon footprint reduction, providing an objective benchmark against which to assess an organisation’s ability to measure and reduce emissions in a three year period. The recertification process is equally robust, demanding an even greater focus on the implementation of energy management processes and ongoing improvements to carbon efficiency. In total, Carbon Trust Standard-certified companies have achieved reductions of over 3.6 Metric Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent, the standard measurement of CO2 emissions.
