Paris – June 7, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today signalled its continued commitment to technology innovation following a 12-month period of major product launches at the global telecommunications group.
Publishing its annual review, Alcatel-Lucent highlighted new technologies that it had developed to meet consumer demand for high-speed communications on any device, at any time, on any network.
Major investment in research and development, led by Bell Labs’ research, forms a core part of Alcatel-Lucent’s business strategy as the company expands its product offerings, geographic reach and service capabilities for network operators and internet service providers.
The year has been defined by a focus on building the foundations of a new digital economy based on new radio technology, high speed optics and fast data processing. More people, across more countries want to do more online, we are providing them the tools to do so.
Four highlights from the year are:
1. lightRadio – The race for bandwidth continues unabated. More people want more access to high speed mobile communications. Existing networks are having difficulty meeting the demand. New networks mean more antennas using more power. In 2011 Alcatel-Lucent launched lightRadio which is a solution to the problem. It is a cube that is lighter than a drinks can and not much bigger, reduces network power consumption by 51% and can be deployed in locations that previously did not have mobile coverage.
2. CloudBand – We have developed CloudBand to connect the network to the cloud. Cloud computing is now available to network companies, not just a couple of high profile app developers. CloudBand is a technology that gives service providers the ability to offer cloud computing to retail and consumer customers. It is the foundation for a new class of ‘carrier-cloud’ services.
3. Smart grids – As the summer months bring warm temperatures to the Northern Hemisphere, aging power grids and rising demand, leads power utilities to transform the way they do business. To enable this transformation, power utilities are taking a closer look at a different kind of power — the power of their communications network to enable the smart grid and its real-time applications. Learn more about how Alcatel-Lucent has worked with Canadian utility AltaLink to move all mission-critical communications onto wide-area networks, thereby taking advantage of reliable digital features and functionality.
4. OpenTouch – The OpenTouch suite of communications platforms allows companies to embrace multimedia and multi-party communications. Where once companies relied on telephones and one-to-one meetings, OpenTouch means they can now incorporate new tools to ensure the most efficient working practices.
Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive of Alcatel Lucent, said: “Our customers want to provide the best communications solutions to consumers and businesses. It is our job to keep innovating to ensure they are able to do so. These technologies are examples of how in 2011 we helped our clients to deliver the very best communications. Whether assisting emergency services, or providing mobile access to areas previously in service dead-zones, the last year has seen Alcatel-Lucent make significant progress.”
