AI Predicts Central Paris Will Win Gold for 5G Performance During the 2024 Olympics with 96% Accuracy

SmartCIC Technologies tested Bouygues Telecom, Free and Orange 5G network performance but found no one provider leads in performance across the entire French capital.

Paris, France, Tuesday 30th July 2024 – SmartCIC Technologies, a global leader in enterprise-grade wireless testing and artificial intelligence (AI), performance-tested 5G cellular networks across Paris ahead of the Olympic Games and accurately predicted maximum 5G download speeds of nearly 600mbps or more. Enterprises and visitors to the Olympic Games will see Bouygues Telecom delivering the fastest maximum download (661.6 Mbps) and upload speeds (161.62 Mbps) in central Paris based on real-world testing. These 5G speeds support social media, video streaming and downloads for both enterprise and consumer use cases throughout the games.

SmartCIC Technologies collected data from over 10 million data points throughout a week of drive testing Bouygues Telecom, Free and Orange 5G networks ahead of the Olympics. It test drove different types of routes based on a variety of parameters including congested areas, high-traffic Olympic Games sites, commercial zones and at different times of day to get a comprehensive set of results. It used these data points to accurately predict network performance across Paris with 96% accuracy. Its predictive analytics had a peak accuracy of 98.9% when compared to real-world results from across the city.

“Our testing team has observed that Bouygues has the best performance in the most central areas of Paris and bigger neighborhoods, but had some large suburbs where connectivity was inconsistent, or not available. Free and Orange provided the most consistent 5G performance across the entire city of Paris. The results illustrate just how varied 5G performance can be across an urban area,” said Toby Forman, CEO at SmartCIC Technologies. “With this level of variation, predictive analytics becomes essential for understanding local 5G performance on a granular street by street and building by building level.”

Across all of Paris, SmartCIC Technologies’ testing found that Free provides the highest stability for both download and latency, and Orange leads in upload speeds. In the areas Bouygues Telecom operates, it provides higher performance than Orange and Free combined. Testing found that its download speeds were 15-25% higher than Free with 100% lower latency. Bouygues Telecom’s exceeded Orange’s by 40-50%.

“Our real-world testing and AI show that Paris is ready to support huge network demands during the Olympic Games. We can see that different providers in different areas are better positioned to support consumer and enterprise use cases. For example, Free’s download and latency will support consumers using social media or VoIP calling while Orange’s upload speeds enable large file transfers for enterprises. It is a vast and varied landscape that demands greater visibility into performance to support different use cases,” said Forman.

Paris Olympics 2024 – 5G Performance

  Download Upload Latency
Bouygues Telecom 661.6 161.62 19.43
Free 660.9 123.1 21.26
Orange 597.8 195.99 26.83

Cellular testing data was captured in the field then uploaded to SmartCIC Technologies’ database in real-time. More than 30 Machine Learning (ML) models and methodologies were then used to accurately predict cellular performance, boosted by proprietary AI.
