PowerUP: Pioneering Clean Backup Power with the New 3kW Hydrogen-Powered Generator

Tallinn, Estonia – June 12, 2024 – PowerUP Energy Technologies introduces the UP3K, a groundbreaking 3kW hydrogen-powered generator that epitomises resilience in power generation.

With a significant number of telecom base stations globally, especially in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, being dependent on diesel generators, the UP3K offers a sustainable and timely alternative to telecom operators and tower companies seeking to reach their emission-cutting targets.

In 2019, the mobile industry set a goal to reach net zero by 2050, becoming one of the first sectors in the world to set such an industry-wide target. Many leading operators have said they will reach net zero by 2030.

“Our innovation is in line with the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions and supports the industry’s move towards sustainable energy sources,” said  Ivar Kruusenberg, CEO of PowerUP Energy Technologies.

The telecom industry is a significant electricity consumer, with operators using around 320 TWh of electricity in 2022, equivalent to approximately 1.3% of global electricity use.

Access to the power grids is inconsistent in several developing regions, leading to a significant historic reliance on diesel generators. This is especially prevalent in rural and remote areas where grid access is limited or non-existent. Diesel fuel, which accounts for over 10% of the total energy usage across all mobile operators, poses a substantial burden to carbon dioxide emissions, on top of high costs.

PowerUP Energy Technologies offers a sustainable and innovative solution with its 3kW hydrogen-powered generator. The company lists Tele2 and Telia among its first customers.

“The product is poised to revolutionise the industry by providing a clean, efficient, and reliable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based generators,” said Kruusenberg.

Modular UP3K is designed to integrate seamlessly with additional batteries and PowerUP’s products, enabling operators to create a power supply to match their needs, whether it’s 3K, 6K, or more.

With the ability to emit zero CO2 emissions, operate silently, and require minimal maintenance, PowerUP’s generators represent a significant step forward in achieving global net-zero targets and reducing the telecom industry’s carbon footprint.
