Ericsson has shipped 10 million 5G-ready radios worldwide. In this Q&A, Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, shares his thoughts on what this milestone means for the company and for the industry.
Can you share some insights on reaching the milestone of shipping 10 million 5G-ready radios worldwide?
It’s a phenomenal achievement to reach this milestone, and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. Our journey has been characterized by continuous innovation and a deep commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology. We have invested heavily in research and development to ensure that our radios are at the forefront of 5G advancements. Building strong relationships with our customers continues to be a driving force behind our accomplishments.
What sets Ericsson apart in the 5G landscape, enabling such a rapid deployment of 5G-ready radios?
Our ability to innovate for cost and performance leadership is one of the reasons. We have a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of deploying 5G networks that our customers recognize and value – that’s why they choose us. We continually push the technology boundaries, improving capacity, energy, and weight of our products over previous generations.
With 5G networks expanding globally, what impact do you foresee this milestone having on the future of connectivity and communication?
With 5G-ready radios deployed worldwide, we are enabling faster and more reliable connections for consumers and enterprise. This technology opens a world of possibilities, from enhanced mobile experiences and immersive applications to transformative industrial automation and IoT solutions.
How do you envision this achievement shaping the company’s position in the competitive telecommunications industry?
This reinforces our position as a leader in the telecommunications industry. It demonstrates our commitment to providing the most advanced 5G solutions to our customers, empowering them to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. We will continue to invest in technology leadership centered on innovation, openness, and growing our customers’ business.
Alongside the 10 million 5G-ready radios milestone, what other notable advancements or innovations has Ericsson made in the 5G space?
We have established a leadership position in 5G by investing for cost and performance, which also enabled us to bring sustainable solutions to our customers. About 50 percent of 5G traffic outside of China runs on our networks, and today 147 live 5G networks are powered by Ericsson, of which 25 are 5G Standalone. Our focus on sustainability has also led to the development of energy-efficient solutions, reducing the environmental impact of 5G networks. It’s rewarding to see these efforts in our 5G solutions recognized by important independent analysts’ reports such as Gartner 5G Magic Quadrant 2023, and Frost Radar Global 5G Infrastructure 2023, for three years in a row. We also scored the number one position in the latest ABI Research report on telco vendors sustainability.
Looking ahead, what are the next steps for Ericsson as it continues to lead the way in the development and deployment of 5G technology?
Our strategy is simple yet powerful: make our customers successful, invest in technology and cost leadership, and drive productivity and efficiency. We will continue to drive innovation, working closely with our customers to co-create solutions that address their evolving needs. We aim to expand the deployment of 5G networks globally, ensuring that the benefits of this transformative technology are accessible to as many people as possible.
