Supporting the Channel Islands: Jersey Telecom and Ericsson partner to build next generation mobile network

Supporting the Channel Islands: Jersey Telecom and Ericsson partner to build next generation mobile network

For the next phase of their network transformation journey, JT have partnered with Ericsson to build a new mobile network for the Channel Islands.

Powered by Ericsson’s radio access network (RAN) and cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core, the ambitious project will begin this year, with the network modernization estimated for completion in 2026. The agreement also includes Ericsson’s future-proof and scalable mobile transport solutions, data-driven network management services and the latest energy efficient products and technologies as part of a sustainable network evolution.

A platform for innovation

As well as boasting outstanding natural beauty and a rich history, the Channel Islands are a hotbed of economic activity, with thriving industries in financial services, agriculture, and tourism. JT already drives innovation through their world-leading full-fiber connectivity to homes and businesses.

Now, consumers and enterprises are set to benefit further from the new mobile network, which will underpin JT’s domestic services, as well as advancing their international and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities.

As well as offering improved speeds and security, the network modernization will bring noticeable improvements for businesses and consumers. Those include improvements to voice quality on mobile calls, more bandwidth for mobile users and improved coverage The program will enable future 5G and technology ambitions in the Channel Islands to be met.

Kirsten Morel, Deputy Chief Minister of Jersey, and Minister for Economic Development, added: “Digital infrastructure plays an incredibly important role in our society, with communication technologies helping to address social, environmental, and economic challenges all across the world. Not only do we want islanders to have the most reliable and fastest internet possible, but we also want them to be able to access the services that new technology can provides. This investment in the next generation network by JT will do just that.”
