[Munich, Germany, September 9, 2021] Huawei presented its latest augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) solution at the 2021 International Motor Show Germany (IAA MOBILITY 2021). This solution turns the front windshield into a first-person view (FPV) display that integrates advanced technologies to deliver both safety and infotainment functions, creating an all-new driving experience.
With over two decades of experience in the ICT optical field, Huawei applies cutting-edge optical technologies to smart vehicles and develops the Intelligent Automotive Optics Solution, in which Huawei AR-HUD plays an important role. As a small device featuring large-frame UHD display, Huawei AR-HUD easily adapts to a variety of contexts. It displays dashboard information, provides AR navigation, supports safe assisted driving, optimizes prompts for night vision/rain-fog conditions, as well as delivering entertainment content.
AR Navigation, Ensuring Safe Driving All the Way
HUDs were first used on fighter jets to improve flight safety and were later applied in the automobile industry. The innovative AR-HUD launched by Huawei provides a 13° x 5° field of view (FOV), meaning that a 70-inch virtual image is displayed 7.5 m in front of the driver. The AR-HUD displays dashboard information at the bottom without blocking the driver’s view and enables safe assisted driving. It also provides AR navigation information that fits the road surface and covers multiple lanes as required. For example, at a three-way intersection, the AR-HUD can offer precise navigation suggestions. The AR-HUD can also accurately mark surrounding vehicles and pedestrians in night vision/rain-fog conditions, improving driving safety in poor visibility.
Entertainment, Rich Information Display
Huawei AR-HUD enables over 100 PPD full-HD display and provides a bright, high-contrast, and undistorted image. Users can now enjoy an excellent video and audio experience. The front passenger (or the driver when the vehicle is parked) can have an immersive experience with HD videos, video calls, and games. Moreover, by combining points of interest (POIs) on a real-scene map, the AR-HUD displays information about parking lots, restaurants, shopping malls, cinemas, and gas stations in real time, creating a high-tech lifestyle for its users.
Huawei AR-HUD is compact (only 10 L) and features a large FOV. Its high FOV-to-volume ratio allows it to adapt to multiple vehicle models. Traditional HUD usually causes ghosting and dizziness. To address this problem, Huawei uses a unique optical path design and algorithm technologies to improve definition and eliminate dizziness caused by ghosting, significantly enhancing user experience.
Kevin Huang, President of Huawei General Optical Applications Product Line, said: “Huawei AR-HUD uses an innovative optical display engine and spatial optics technologies to break the limitations of traditional media, creating a brand-new experience for safe driving. Next, AR-HUD will evolve to a larger frame, higher definition, and naked-eye 3D to build a super vision that has never been achieved before. Huawei will continue to invest in the R&D of optical technologies to offer a wide range of optical application products for in-vehicle and other fields, empowering numerous industries with our optical capabilities.”
