2018 was a very successful year for DE-CIX, with a connected capacity of more than 45 terabits, and more than 2,000 connected ports. Overall growth numbers of about 30 percent are the result of our ongoing efforts to grow our ecosystem by adding new locations, new sites, new services, and hence, new customers.
New locations, more sites
Following the success of 2018, we will add new DE-CIX locations by deploying our interconnection infrastructure at additional metro regions in 2019. We already have announced the launch of DE-CIX Lisbon, and three locations in India (in Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai). We also plan for additional sites at our existing locations to extend our reach in these metro regions. This allows networks to easily connect to DE-CIX, and by adding new networks it increases the value of the DE-CIX ecosystem for already connected customers. A big part of DE-CIX success is based on being carrier and data center-neutral, thereby offering the greatest reach. We will continue to foster this strength.
Security: RPKI-based filtering at the DE-CIX route servers
Performing strict filtering at route servers was always a great focus for DE-CIX as it limits the effectiveness of IP and ASN hijacks. In keeping with this tradition, DE-CIX is currently in discussion with customers concerning how RPKI-based filtering at the DE-CIX route servers should be implemented in detail. An implementation at all DE-CIX operated IXs will follow soon so that we can further increase the security levels provided. This will contribute to enhancing the security of the Internet routing system in general. Of course, the new DE-CIX looking glass will also be enhanced so that RPKI-based filtered routes will also be listed.
100GE on the rise
More than 300 of the more than 2,000 connected ports at DE-CIX’s Internet Exchanges are 100GE ports. At the moment, most of these 100GE ports are connected to DE-CIX Frankfurt, while other locations are catching up. We will extend our 100GE capacities at all locations in order to fulfill the needs of our customers.
A revamped customer portal is on the way
DE-CIX’s software and web development teams currently put a lot of resources into revamping the DE-CIX customer portal. In a first step, the existing portal will be replaced by a new developed portal which builds the technical basis for more services and a better usability in the portal. This will allow us to enhance the service insights features of the portal, which will be released step-by-step over the course of 2019.
