Sprint Joins the City of Kansas City and Cisco to Make Its Hometown the Most Comprehensive Smart+Connected City in the U.S.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), June 04, 2015 – What do easy and free Wi-Fi access, smooth-running traffic, and kiosks offering maps and entertainment options at your fingertips have in common? In Smart+Connected™ Cities around the globe, the answer is an intelligent Wi-Fi network.

In conjunction with the city of Kansas City, Mo., and Cisco, Sprint (NYSE:S, news, filings) announced today it is deploying Cisco hardware to construct, own and manage the intelligent Wi-Fi network that will serve as the backbone of Kansas City’s Smart+Connected City framework. Sprint will be the first mobile service provider to play an important connectivity role in the development of a U.S.-based Smart+Connected City ecosystem.

The Wi-Fi network will operate along the 2.2-mile Kansas City streetcar line through downtown. Kansas City will join Barcelona, Spain; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Hamburg, Germany as hubs for this breakthrough technology.

The Sprint Wi-Fi intelligent communications network infrastructure will enable everything from simple Wi-Fi connectivity (for Sprint customers, Kansas Citians and visitors) to smart city applications that deliver maps and information and efficiently address and manage parking, traffic, city lighting, water and waste management. Pinsight Media+, a subsidiary of Sprint, will operate the data analytics and advertising platform, bolstering the intelligent network to enable commerce and brand connections to help bring services to life.

“Sprint looks forward to playing an integral role in this groundbreaking initiative to bring greater connectivity across a wide range of business and consumer applications that support the Internet of Everything in our hometown,” said Stephen Bye, chief technology officer, Sprint. “Delivering Wi-Fi connectivity is a great fit for Sprint, and it enables our customers to more easily use both cellular and Wi-Fi for a better mobile experience.”

The network is the No. 1 one priority at Sprint, and every day Sprint continues to improve the customer experience. Following a multiyear overhaul, the Sprint network now provides significantly better call quality and faster data speeds in more places than before. In Kansas City, recent enhancements include a new wireless system at Kauffman Stadium, on-air just in time to support Royals fans on Opening Day. In April Sprint also deployed 2.5GHz spectrum at Sporting Park, home to Sporting Kansas City (MLS), providing KC soccer fans a faster data experience. And earlier this year Sprint added capacity and deployed 2.5GHz spectrum at Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City.
