WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Frontier Communications (NYSE:FTR, news, filings) welcomes today’s action by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implementing Phase II of the Connect America Fund (CAF). The CAF framework supports the FCC’s goal of increased broadband access for rural America. The FCC established the CAF in 2011 to facilitate broadband deployment to the millions of Americans living in rural areas without access to broadband infrastructure. The CAF Phase II support will enable Frontier and other carriers to accelerate investment in high cost, unserved markets across America.
Over the last three years, Frontier has utilized CAF Phase I interim support to deploy broadband across its rural footprint, accepting $71.9 million in 2012 to deploy broadband to 93,000 unserved locations and $61.3 million in 2013 to deploy or upgrade broadband service to more than 103,000 locations. With the CAF Phase II support, Frontier will continue to expand access to this life-changing technology to additional rural customers across the country.
Frontier President and CEO Dan McCarthy said, “The FCC’s commitment to supporting broadband deployment to rural America, combined with Frontier’s passion for serving these small communities and markets, are improving lives across the country. CAF Phase II is a critical next step in delivering life changing broadband service – and the major economic benefits associated with it – to rural America. We will be reviewing today’s Public Notice in more detail and look forward to participating and utilizing the resources to expand broadband infrastructure across our rural markets.”
Frontier Communications’ investments over the past four years throughout the company’s service areas have made broadband service available to more than 1.1 million new households. Today, Frontier broadband is available to more than 7.7 million households throughout the U.S. In addition to the locations that will have access to broadband for the first time, Frontier as a company has made significant investments in broadband speeds and services for all of its customers. Moreover, the company has introduced simplified broadband offerings and bundled service packages that provide customers with choice and affordable options. CAF Phase II funding will enable Frontier to continue expanding these offerings to additional areas in its markets.
