Sonus Session Border Controller Software Edition Part of Joint HP Project at Mobile World Congress 2015
- Sonus collaborates with HP at Mobile World Congress 2015 to demonstrate how virtualization can improve the delivery speed of Cloud-based Unified Communications (UC) and Rich Communications Services (RCS).
- The Sonus Session Border Controller Software edition (SBC SWe) running on the HP OpenNFV Platform will demonstrate Virtual Network Function as a Service (VNFaaS) use case, as defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Industry Specification Group (ISG).
- The project will be located in the HP booth in Hall 2 Stand 2D50.
WESTFORD, Mass. – Sonus Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:SONS, news, filings), a global leader in enabling and securing real-time communications, announced today that the Sonus Session Border Controller Software edition (SBC SWe) will be part of a joint project with HP at Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona, Spain, demonstrating how delivery of Cloud-based Unified Communications (UC) and Rich Communications Services (RCS) can be accelerated through virtualization.
The demonstration – located in the HP booth in Hall 2 Stand 2D50 – will be comprised of the Sonus SBC SWe running as a fully featured Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) application on the HP OpenNFV Platform. Together, Sonus and HP will demonstrate how hardware, power and space requirements for deploying network functions can be reduced without losing functionality.
Sonus and HP will demonstrate the Virtual Network Function as a Service (VNFaaS) use case, by enabling service providers to virtualize enterprise customer premise equipment (CPE) on service providers’ virtual networks so that enterprises can consume the resources they require as virtual services. As network functions are virtualized, this demonstration will show that the typical base of dedicated hardware appliances normally used by network operators is no longer required. Consequently, scalability and customization of real-time communications features and services such as UC or RCS become easier to implement across the network.
The Sonus SBC SWe is the industry’s first software-based SBC architected to deliver unlimited scalability with the same advanced features and functionality of the Sonus SBC 5000 Series on a virtualized platform. The portability and flexibility of the SBC SWe makes it an ideal choice for service providers that have invested in virtualization technology, prefer pre-packaged “solutions in a box,” require remote network deployments or want to expand opportunities into new geographic markets where deploying a hardware solution would be impractical or cost prohibitive. Sonus provides customers with a set of performance specifications for their host platforms, enabling customers to rapidly expand capacity, calls per second, features, transcoding, and security capabilities with a simple license key as business demands change.
“By collaborating with HP, Sonus is accelerating the mainstream offering of NFV-enabled SBC technology that delivers the session intelligence, interworking and security to realize Cloud-based real-time communications,” said Kevin Riley, chief technology officer, Sonus. “Sonus is enabling service providers to open new revenue opportunities through efficient, scalable Cloud-based service delivery of advanced click-to-connect type services for voice, video and collaboration.”
“Communications service providers, facing increasing competition from over-the-top providers, are turning to virtualization of core networks and network functions to accelerate innovation and launch new services faster and with less expense,” said Werner Schaefer, vice president, Network Functions Virtualization, HP. “Our work with Sonus demonstrates how the delivery of Cloud-based real-time communications features and services become easier to implement across provider networks.”
“The combination of Sonus SWe running on the HP OpenNFV Platform can provide network operators a robust virtual network environment to deliver cost effective, scalable and customizable real-time communications,” said Jim Burton, Co-founder, UC Strategies and CEO, CT Link.
- Sonus CTO Kevin Riley will participate in the “HP NFV ISV” Forum, taking place at the HP Showcase in Hall 3 Stand 3A20 of the Fira de Barcelona on Monday, March 2 from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm CET and Tuesday, March 3 from 12 pm to 12:45 pm CET.
