Windstream and Cyan Collaborate to Build Next-Generation 100G Regional and Metro Networks

100G infrastructure will support data center and cloud connectivity, network services, wireless backhaul, research and education networks, and more.

PETALUMA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Cyan (CYNI), a leading provider of SDN, NFV, and packet-optical solutions for network operators, today announced that Windstream, a leading provider of advanced network communications headquartered in Little Rock, Ark., has selected Cyan to help upgrade its regional and metro networks to 100G utilizing Cyan’s Z-Series packet-optical hardware.

Initial deployments of this new infrastructure are underway with the introduction of a new packet-based 100GbE network across major Windstream markets. This will allow Windstream to offer advanced IP services for small to medium businesses and higher speed Ethernet broadband services to residential subscribers. In addition, Windstream will be in a better position to compete for higher margin competitive services including data center and cloud connectivity, wireless backhaul, research and education networks, and more.

“Windstream makes technology investments that are directly in line with supporting both the company’s long-term growth and the critical use cases of our customers,” said Randy Nicklas, CTO and EVP of Engineering at Windstream. “Upgrading from 10G to 100G capacity across our regional and metro networks through Cyan’s Z-Series platforms will allow Windstream to utilize network resources efficiently and provide best-in-class services to our customers.”

Cyan’s Z-Series Packet Optical Platforms have been an important part of Windstream’s network architecture for many years. Initially serving wireless backhaul and consumer broadband applications, the Z-Series will now support a wide-breadth of high-performance applications across Windstream’s footprint. The system provides an important advantage over competing platforms in that its 100G technology is provided in a single-slot, increasing density and reducing space and power requirements.

“Windstream is clearly taking the lead in evolving their regional and metro networks to 100G and we’re proud to support them in this transformation. This evolution was discussed early in our relationship with Windstream and it’s exciting to see it now coming to fruition,” said Mike Hatfield, President, Cyan.
