Huawei Succeeds in NTT DOCOMO’s Network Functions Virtualization Proof of Concept Trial

[Shenzhen, China, October 14, 2014]: Huawei today announced that it has successfully completed a proof-of-concept (PoC) trial of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) led by NTT DOCOMO, INC., the largest mobile service provider in Japan.

NFV comprises the operation of network functions on a multi-purpose server using virtualization technologies which allows operators to offer more flexible telecommunication services while helping to simplify network configuration and reduce operational costs. In the NFV PoC trial with DOCOMO, Huawei successfully completed interoperability test on its virtualized software for the Evolved Packet Core (EPC)*1, the core network supporting the operator’s LTE services, FusionSphere Cloud OS*2 based on OpenStack architecture and its Management and Orchestration (MANO)*3 system with NEC Corporation. The trial confirmed functionality and performance, including scalable data processing and stable network recovery in the event of hardware failure.

Commenting on the successful trial, Mr. Seizo Onoe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, NTT DOCOMO, said, “Thanks to collaborative efforts in the mobile network industry, NFV is soundly moving toward practical realization, rather than just ending up as a pie-in-the-sky dream. I am delighted that we have confirmed the feasibility of NFV through multi-vendor initiatives with Huawei and other top ICT players.”

“NFV is a core Huawei technology strategy for carriers and one of the main investment areas for technologies of the future,” said Mr. Ryan Ding, Executive Director of Board and President of Products and Solutions, Huawei. “We hope this trial will help contribute to NFV standardization and commercialization across the industry. As a member of the ETSI Industry Specification Group for NFV and one of 17 highest-level founding member firms of Open Platform for NFV, Huawei will continue to increase our investments in NFV and cooperate closely with NTT DOCOMO and other operators to accelerate the progress of NFV standardization and global commercialization.”

Through this latest collaboration, Huawei reaffirms its commitments to realizing high-quality services tailored for the Japanese telecom market and standardizing and commercializing NFV technologies together with operators and industry peers.

Huawei has participated in more than 30 PoC trials on NFV with leading operators around the world. According to a leading analyst firm Current Analysis, Huawei has been rated as a top supplier for NFV solutions. Of the 100 telecom operators surveyed, 67% would select Huawei for NFV deployment.*4

*1 Virtualized software for EPC: Huawei’s virtualized software for EPC (vEPC) is optimized with cloud aware architecture and brings operators benefits including improved resource efficiency, flexible scaling and high reliability while it is independent of NFV infrastructure.

*2 FusionSphere Cloud OS: Huawei’s virtualization layer is based on OpenStack cloud infrastructure and features enhanced carrier-grade performance, high reliability and easy maintenance.

*3 MANO (Management and Orchestration): Management and orchestration function defined in ETSI NFV ISG reference architecture.

*4 Survey results based on the feedback from 100 senior executives including CTOs and CMOs from telecom network operators around the world are available at www.currentanalysis.com/t/2014/SDNsurvey.
