Latest ICT Solutions for Smart Grids Showcased at Huawei’s Global Power Industry Summit
[Brisbane, Australia, August 21, 2014]: Huawei hosted its second Global Power Industry Summit in Brisbane, Australia on August 21 to 22, 2014. Themed “Innovative ICT Empowers Better Connected Smart Grids”, the event gathered representatives from power companies, industry organizations, and the academic community from around the world to share insights and best practices on building connected smart grids and explore upcoming trends in the power industry.
The event included a number of keynote presentations and roundtable sessions including the first keynote session themed “Future Electricity Needs a Better Connected Smart Grids”, where executives from an Australian power company and Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation delivered insightful presentations on using smart grids to achieve enhanced response time and integrating IT and OT (Operation Technology)for power grids.
As part of the event, Huawei and IDC also released a joint report titled “ICT Enables Superior Grid Performance” and Christopher Holme, Senior Analyst of International Data Corporation (IDC) spoke about the role of innovative ICT technology in building better connected power grids.
The roundtable sessions at the Summit focused on exploring the various forms of next generation power grids including distributed energy, automated, and the Internet of Things (IoT)-based grids. After a series of discussions, event participants concluded that smart grids for the future need to be interconnected, allows for all sensible scenarios, secure, and reliable as traditional centralized and one-way power grids will not be able to support the deployment of new service offerings.
A better connected smartgrid has four major features, firstly it should be interactive and compatible with renewable energy resource, then it requires a smarter dispatch that could adjust the electricity tariffs that regulate power consumption demands, at the meantime, IT and OT will be coordinated in the future that ask for a consolidated grid, and there is one pre-condition underlying these features, which is a robust and self-healing capability. With all these crucial features, a better Smart Grid will closely connect consumers, electricity, and equipment in every second, every watt, and everywhere. A better Smart Grid will be a fully-connected grid that provides electricity everywhere at every second, and utilizes every watt” said Mr. David He, President of Marketing and Solution Sales, Huawei Enterprise Business Group.
At the event, Huawei showcased four innovative ICT solutions for better connected smart grids.
Power Transmission Communications Solution: Strong & Reliable backbone transmission, one net carries all businesses
As more smart devices are being connected to smart grids, there is a need for power grids to connect separate service nodes and form a converged communications network to ensure secure and reliable operations. IP-based smart network technologies are ideal to address this challenge and can be used to build a smart optical communications network.
Huawei’s IP-based Power Transmission Communications Solution provides an Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON) that supports flexible route selection and dynamic management. Centralized power network communications can be transformed to become distributed, which significantly shortens the time required for service provisioning and ensures reliable and efficient long distance transmissions.
Power Distribution Automation Solution & AMI Solution: Wired & Wireless agile access, fulfill all scenarios requirements
As power companies use smart grids to interact with end users, and monitor and control its operations, more IP-based smart terminals are being connected to smart grid systems. This creates a need for enhanced network flexibility and efficiency.
Further to this trend and to prepare for future business growth, more power companies are building private networks to connect smart terminals. Huawei’s Power Distribution Automation Communications Solution uses next generation wireless Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies to enable secure and seamless access to all services. The solution supports intelligent meter recording, smart homes and energy efficiency management to help power companies address IoT-related demands. It also supports real-time management and offers a next generation all-in-one platform that integrates measuring, sensing, and controlling functions to ensure that electricity is available at anytime, anywhere.
Network Intelligence Protection System: Ensures secure and smooth operations
Smart grids must be highly secure and have “self-healing” capabilities for secure and smooth power generation, transmission, transformation, distribution, consumption, and dispatch. A high-speed, real-time, integrated, and bidirectional communications system is key to the operations of smart grids. Huawei’s Network Intelligence Protection System integrates multiple network protection modes and policies in an intelligent network security system to offer policy-based data protection, which enables 99.9999 percent reliability in electrical communications. In addition, unattended operations can be implemented at electricity substations through a comprehensive smart monitoring system for safe energy production. Through allocating various services to different zones throughout the network and isolating services by high-performance firewalls, all service data is encrypted and transmitted to efficiently manage the security of a power network.
Distributed Cloud DC: Flexible & Efficient Distributed Cloud DC establish a solid foundation
With the trends of smart dispatch and control, consolidation, and collaboration, Huawei offers an innovative Distributed Cloud Data Center (DC2) to improve the data processing capabilities of Smart Grid information platforms. The DC2 converges traditionally dispersed, layered, and hybrid data centers into a Distributed Cloud Data Center. The DC2 features a fully flattened architecture, point-to-point interconnection and unified resource management. With unified management, presentation, and operation, the DC2 provides strong support for Big Data platforms and power service systems.
Huawei is dedicated to providing innovative ICT products and solutions for the power sector. Through continuous R&D efforts in communications technology for building smart grids, the company provides reliable and efficient ICT solutions that enhance the competitiveness of power companies. To better understand industry-specific challenges, it works with industry partners NARI Technology, Beijing Sifang Automation, Dongfang Electronics, Integrated Electronic Systems Lab, Schneider, and Alstom. Currently, Huawei’s ICT products and solutions have been deployed by more than 160 power companies around the world and the company is a leader in deploying commercial eLTE-based power distribution solutions.
