Grande Communications deploys E7 for gigabit services and new Compass Open Link Cable software for DOCSIS provisioning of GPON
PETALUMA, CA – July 8, 2014 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX, news, filings) today announced that Grande Communications (Grande), a Texas-based broadband communications company and one of the nation’s top 20 largest cable operators, has deployed the Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP), 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs), and its recently introduced Compass Open Link Cable software to deliver broadband speeds of one gigabit per second (Gbps) in West Austin, TX. Grande has led the cable industry in the delivery of gigabit services, introducing its “Power 1000” service in this highly competitive market in February of 2014.
“Demand for gigabit services is taking the nation by storm and our subscribers are demanding nothing less than a world-class broadband experience,” said Matt Murphy, Grande Communications president. “To meet this demand, we were looking for a fast and efficient path to bring gigabit speeds to our subscribers while leveraging our existing DOCSIS provisioning systems. Calix has delivered for us by providing a powerful fiber access platform over GPON that has allowed us to become Austin’s first gigabit services provider. And now, with Open Link Cable, Grande will have the ability to provision these advanced fiber services with our back office systems untouched.”
The Calix E7-2 ESAP and 700GE family of ONTs deliver the flexibility and scalability necessary for Grande to efficiently deliver some of the nation’s top broadband speeds, while Open Link Cable allows them to leverage their existing DOCSIS operational model. The Open Link Cable solution is based on concepts introduced by the CableLabs DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE) specification and is designed to align with future DOCSIS Provisioning of GPON (DPoG) standards that are currently in development. While Open Link Cable integrates with most cable back office systems, Calix professional services can also perform custom integration for those cable operators with unique back office requirements.
“The rising tide of gigabit deployments across the nation is causing cable providers to seek a more rapid path to gigabit speeds while leveraging their existing operational infrastructures,” said cable industry veteran Chris Bowick, who was recently appointed to the Calix Board of Directors. “While DOCSIS 3.1 shows promise in the future, solutions like Open Link Cable, GPON and the Calix E7 snap into existing cable infrastructure, making the leap to gigabit services for cable companies like Grande efficient and cost-effective today.”
