NTT DOCOMO to trial 5G with Ericsson

  • Japan’s market-leading telecommunications company prepares networks for 5G with Ericsson
  • 5G trials will demonstrate ultra-high data rates of 10Gbps using the 15GHz frequency band
  • LTE evolution to 5G benefits both users and industry with improved performance and new machine-to-machine (M2M) applications

Japan’s largest mobile operator NTT DOCOMO and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) are extending their longstanding partnership from 2G through 4G to include trials of 5G technology this year. As the operator continues to expand its LTE networks, it is already preparing for the 5G evolution of the user experience and new M2M applications. The technology shift will be marked by a dramatic increase in the number of mobile broadband connections and rapid increases in traffic volume. 5G is set to deliver on the long-term industry vision of unlimited access to information for anyone and anything.

With the Ericsson 5G trial system, NTT DOCOMO plans to achieve ultra-high bit rates of more than 10Gbps, delivering radio network capability of more than 1,000 times today’s LTE networks.

Seizo Onoe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer at NTT DOCOMO, says: “5G studies are starting to gain real momentum as we point toward 2020. We appreciate that 5G will provide significant performance enhancements to support future new applications that will impact both users and industry. We look forward to showing the potential of 5G radio access technologies via this experimental trial.”

Ericsson has developed advanced antenna technologies with wider bandwidths, higher frequencies and shorter transmission time intervals, as well as radio base stations built with baseband units and radio units developed specifically for the 5G trial.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Senior Vice President and CTO of Ericsson, says: “5G will be a key component in the industry’s movement toward the Networked Society. I’m excited about the new technologies that we are exploring in the joint trial collaboration with NTT DOCOMO. This is an important step in the industry transformation we are experiencing.”

In addition to the new antenna technologies, the trial covers technology areas related to macro/small cell architecture based on the heterogeneous network, broadband communication using frequency bands at 15GHz and high-speed, high-capacity transmission.

Ericsson will work with NTT DOCOMO on outdoor trials that will take place in Yokosuka, Japan.

Ericsson is leading and driving the 5G standards work from today’s exploratory research through pre-standardization activities along with influential standards bodies and industry groups, and will be one of the key players in helping to define this next generation of network technology all the way through to commercialization. Ericsson has established a new research lab to foster collaboration on 5G transport. Industry research is still ongoing and commercial 5G deployments are not expected until closer to 2020.
