[Barcelona, Spain, February 24, 2014]: Huawei, a leading global information and communication technology (ICT) solution provider, today jointly demonstrated its Multi-Carrier and Multi-Flow (MCMF) solution over four High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) data streams with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 in Barcelona.
The solution provides the same or higher data rates when a connected mobile device is on the edge of the cell compared to when it is at the center to ensure a uniform No-Edge user experience.
The rapid growth of mobile broadband (MBB) data traffic poses challenges for operators and their ability to ensure a seamless user experience. High user throughput at the cell edge is an important aspect for ensuring a better user experience. However, user throughput at the cell edge is not as high as at the cell center due to lower radio strength and interference from neighboring cells.
The MCMF solution mitigates these challenges by aggregating, at the mobile terminal, up to four HSDPA data streams coming from one or two sites. For the end user, the MCMF solution provides an improved user experience at the cell edge. For operators, the MCMF solution can balance traffic loads for adjacent cells to improve overall system throughput.
Huawei and Qualcomm Technologies successfully completed end-to-end testing of the MCMF solution prototype in January 2014 in Huawei’s Shanghai lab. The testing achieved up to 60 Mbps of downlink user throughput by using four HSDPA carriers in 10MHz spectrum bandwidth. The test also showed that the MCMF solution can provide 2 times user throughput compared with Dual-carrier HSDPA (DC-HSDPA) data rate.
Mr. Wang Yixiang, president of Huawei’s UMTS product line, said: “Our goal is to maximize the end user experience of the UMTS network. We have been working with Qualcomm Technologies to bring valuable solutions to catch up with our customers’ demands. We expect a large-scale commercialization of the MCMF solution to be fulfilled soon. As a strategic partner of all the MBB operators, Huawei will never stop innovating on the technologies to improve spectrum efficiency and user experience.”
Mario Scipione, Senior Vice President, Technology, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said: “We are pleased to be working with Huawei to drive UMTS/HSPA+ evolution and commercial deployment. As part of Qualcomm Technologies’ initiative to solve the 1,000 times data challenge to address the wireless industry’s unprecedented data demand, the MCMF solution was designed to help operators maximize the cell edge user throughput and utilize spare capacity from neighboring cells.”
The MCMF solution is based on a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Rel-11 multi-flow feature which was standardized by 3GPP in 2012. Huawei is working to further develop and release a commercial version of the MCMF solution.
MWC 2014 will be held in Barcelona from February 24 to 27. Huawei will showcase its latest products and solutions at Fira Gran Via Hall 1 and Hall 3. For more information, please visit http://www.huawei.com/mwc2014 / .
