Faster, safer journeys: Polish Railway expands GSM-R infrastructure with NSN

Warsaw, Poland – February 17, 2014

NSN to deploy mobile network on 440-kilometer stretch of major east-west rail corridor

Nokia Solutions and Networks will provide its GSM-Railway* (GSM-R) mobile infrastructure to cover a 440-kilometer section of Poland’s E-20 railway corridor. To optimize traveling time and help ensure safety, the nation’s rail network management, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PLK), has selected NSN’s solution to modernize communications along the tracks, linking central Poland with the country’s eastern border.

NSN’s GSM-R communications will provide PLK with a secure digital infrastructure. The deal covers the railway section between the central city of Lowicz and Terespol and is to be completed during the fourth quarter of 2015.

For this project, NSN works together with Thales, a global technology leader responsible for the design and development of the complete transmission system for GSM-R. The transmission system will be based on Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Ethernet technology, dedicated particularly to Fixed Dispatcher Terminals communications on the 440-kilometer section. Thales will build turnkey transmission including fiber-optic cables network.

Under the agreement, NSN will deploy its Base Stations and Base Station Controller. For seamless integration, NSN will also provide a broad range of services including network design, project management, network implementation and maintenance. The deal also includes NSN’s NetAct network management system to ensure network efficiency and stability.

“By deploying our leading GSM-R technology, data transmission will eliminate the need for external traffic lights along the tracks, using proven automatic signaling technology to the train instead. This will ensure greater safety for trains and passengers while increasing travel speeds and the capacity of railway operations,” said Dirk Lewandowski, head of Railway Solutions at NSN. “This contract marks an important extension of our railways communications projects in Poland after being selected to provide our mobile infrastructure for the strategic Warsaw-Gdynia railway line.”

NSN is one of the inventors of the GSM-R technology, with Siemens researching and creating the GSM-R standard in the early 1990s. The world’s first three GSM-R trial networks and the first commercial network have been supplied by NSN. To date, the company has deployed around 30 GSM-R networks in 21 countries, serving some 50,000 km of railways to make it the world’s number one GSM-R vendor in both the number of commercial networks and the length of operated GSM-R lines.
