Zayo CEO Dan Caruso Awarded Lifetime Achievement Award by CTA

DENVER – September 12, 2013 – Zayo Group’s Dan Caruso was announced the winner of the Bob Newman Lifetime Achievement award at the Colorado Technology Association’s 2013 APEX Awards. The prestigious technology awards recognize outstanding accomplishments and leadership by Colorado’s advanced technology companies and professionals. The awards were handed out at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Denver to a crowd of more than 850 attendees on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

The Bob Newman Lifetime Achievement award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding achievements and commitments to furthering innovative technology in our community and the state, and has contributed to the initiatives of Colorado Technology Association (CTA). In addition to expanding Colorado’s technology footprint through the companies he has led, Caruso was recognized for consistently giving back to the startup community through education, mentoring and angel investing.

“Dan is a well deserving winner because of his involvement in Colorado technology economic development,” said Erik Mitisek, chief executive officer at CTA. “At CTA we wanted to recognize the best and Dan is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Colorado.”

Dan Caruso is president and CEO of Zayo Group, a $1 billion international fiber-based Bandwidth Infrastructure provider to enterprise and carrier customers and recently served as on the boards of Colorado-based Envysion, as Chairman, and New Global Telecom.  Dan was also a board member of GTS Central Europe.  Dan has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of Illinois.

As one of the founding executives of Level 3 Communications, Dan was responsible for Level 3’s engineering, construction, and operations organizations. Between 2001 and 2003, most of Level 3’s lines of business and marketing functions fell under his jurisdiction. Earlier, Dan was part of the MFS Communications senior management team.  After leaving Level 3, Dan headed ICG Communications from 2004-2006, taking the debt-challenged provider to a successful buyout by Level 3.

Dan Caruso is an active supporter of entrepreneurial and educational ventures along the Front Range.  Dan co-teaches a class on raising venture capital and private equity in the Leeds MBA Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also an Entrepreneur in residence at the Daniels College of Business at University of Denver. Dan is on the Entrepreneurial Advisory Board of Silicon Flatirons, a center for law, technology and entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado, as well as an active supporter of Start Up Colorado.  He also is actively involved in the CU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences as a frequent guest lecturer and supporter of the Engineering Management and Entrepreneurship program.

Since the APEX Award’s inception in 2000, CTA’s APEX Awards have acknowledged the top technology company success stories produced in Colorado.

“I am honored to be recognized by CTA,” said Caruso. “Colorado has a fantastic entrepreneurial environment which nurtures the technology and telecommunications companies in the region.  Zayo is proud to be part of a community that fuels innovation and economic development.  We aspire to play a major role in the advancement of telecommunications for decades to come.”
