Nokia Siemens Networks expands bandwidth for Funet across 1,000 Km
Nokia Siemens Networks and Finnish University and Research Network (Funet) have successfully concluded a field trial for simultaneously deploying 10G (gigabits per second) and 100G optical network connections for a distance of 1,000 Km. The test validates Funet’s ability to provide an efficient optical network built for the future, and affirms Nokia Siemens Networks’ leadership position in optical transport.
Funet provides network connectivity to Finnish research and higher education organizations. The trial confirmed that Funet’s installed base can be used to deliver 10G and 100G services simultaneously to meet its clients demands for bandwidth as required for working with ‘big data’ sets for scientific projects.
The 100G trial was done as a plug-and-play integration of Nokia Siemens Networks’ 100GbE transponder* with its DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) platform hiT 7300**. This allowed the use of 10G and 100G in parallel across a distance of 1,000 Km. Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management tools automated the process, enabling Funet to cost-efficiently upload the software and install the hardware.
A second test using the DWDM platform hiT 7300 and third-party 100G transponders successfully demonstrated that Nokia Siemens Networks’ standardized optical networks solution can be combined with any equipment, thereby protecting the investment in the infrastructure. In addition, the optical channel protection mechanism integrated in the DWDM platform ensured that the traffic was automatically routed to a secondary connection when the primary connection was interrupted.
Juha Oinonen, development manager of Funet, said: “As demand for high capacity data transmission is constantly growing, 100G transmission has already become a key requirement for research and education networks. We have worked with Nokia Siemens Networks since 2008 and yet again the company’s technology has proven to be flexible, cost efficient, future proof and easy to operate.”
“A flexible optical transport plane is a necessity for today’s and future transport networks,” said Herbert Merz, head of Optical Networks, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our best-in-class DWDM platform leverages the value of existing fiber assets and optimizes the network. This helps us to increase the bandwidth to 100G and beyond while protecting network efficiency and decreasing capital costs.”
On December 3, 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks and Marlin Equity Partners announced that they had reached an agreement for Nokia Siemens Networks to sell its Optical Networks business unit to Marlin Equity Partners. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013. The announcement outlined that the deal would result in the unit being established as an independent company, named Coriant, with the goal of becoming a leading provider in the optical market.

Notes:
*Using the CP-QPSK (coherent polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying) modulation format, the transponder integrated into hiT 7300 detects not only an optical signal’s amplitude, but also its phase and polarization. Its enhanced detection capability brings superior performance at highest bit rates, even in the presence of transmission impairments.
**Nokia Siemens Networks’ DWDM offering provides a cost optimized, flexible and automated platform, thereby offering a viable answer to excessive traffic demand, reconfiguration and cost pressure issues. The design principle of the DWDM platform is based on high modularity as well as high re-use, thus creating a single platform from metro to core. It also provides network operators with a new level of simplicity for commissioning and maintaining DWDM systems while providing complete administrator control. The TransNet end-to-end planning tool provides optimal network design, guaranteed performance and automated configuration, resulting in significant operational expenditure savings as well as reduced outage time and procedural errors along with an exceptionally low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). With over 100 DWDM customers around the world, Nokia Siemens Networks provides a migration path to Terabit Optical Transport. It also provides scaling capacity for channels of 10/40/100 Gbps, with its platform being open to 400Gbps and even more.
