Overture Launches 6500, First Platform in new Open Service Delivery Family

New platform addresses today’s Carrier Ethernet 2.0 challenges and provides foundation for tomorrow’s software-defined services at the metro edge through Ensemble OSA™

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., March 26, 2013 Overture, innovating at the metro edge for service providers and network operators worldwide, today introduced the Overture 6500, the first platform in the company’s new Open Service Delivery Family. The industry’s first Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) Ethernet aggregation for any access method, it includes support for fiber, E-Access, copper, SONET/SDH, and TDM.

A flexible platform family, it provides aggregation and switching for performance-assured Ethernet, supporting today’s cloud services, mobile backhaul, wholesale, and metro infrastructure applications. The Overture 6500 is also the entry point for Ensemble OSA, Overture’s open architecture for software-defined services at the metro edge. Together, the Overture 6500 and Ensemble OSA represent a fundamentally new approach to the revenue and operational challenges facing service providers.

“As service providers embrace Carrier Ethernet 2.0 and scale their services using a variety of access types at the metro edge, they are looking to simplify their networks and improve their customers’ experience. Using fewer platforms from fewer vendors is one proven way to do so,” said Erin Dunne, director of research services, Vertical Systems Group. “But that simplification only solves part of the problem. Dynamic, on-demand, and automated services are the key to new revenue opportunities in the cloud – and that requires a shift to more software-defined services. Solutions that help with both of these areas will be pretty compelling.”

The Overture 6500’s scalable, high-availability design is initially available in a 3-slot configuration for performance-assured Ethernet over fiber access and wholesale Ethernet applications. Additional chassis and line card variants for access over other media types will follow the platform’s initial release. With a complete suite of performance assurance and traffic management features, multiple synchronization options, and high service density, the Overture 6500 excels in:

  • Ethernet aggregation for business and cloud services
  • Macro cell and small cell mobile backhaul
  • Metro inter-office infrastructure
  • Wholesale E-Access service presentation and termination

“While Carrier Ethernet has matured and become the industry’s dominant service delivery medium, service providers still face an uphill climb as they look to scale and accelerate new performance-assured services. The metro edge presents unique complexities due to the mix of access technologies and wholesale interconnections required to reach end customers,” said Jennifer Pigg, vice president, Yankee Group. “Solutions that reduce these complexities will dramatically speed time to revenue and reduce operational costs for service providers. If those solutions also easily integrate into next generation software-defined service environments, they have the potential to completely redefine the space.”

“The Overture 6500 Service Delivery Platform solves today’s very real Carrier Ethernet 2.0 pain points while providing a clear migration for the software-defined services enabled by Ensemble OSA,” said Mike Aquino, president and CEO, Overture. “Our customers seeking to optimize service creation, activation, and assurance, now have a unique and effective way to bring the benefits of the cloud to the metro edge.”

The Overture 6500 stands apart from the pack in today’s overcrowded and highly competitive marketplace, thanks to its unique, industry-leading features and capabilities:

  • The industry’s only CE2.0 Ethernet aggregation for any access method, including fiber, E-Access, copper, SONET/SDH, and TDM
  • The most scalable metro edge platform, supporting more than 3,000 subscriber services, leveraging centralized and distributed switching, and available in multiple chassis options
  • Superior, comprehensive resiliency options that include card, power, device, network facility, and multi-site redundancy
  • Forward-looking design ready for future software-defined services and integration Overture’s Ensemble Open Service Architecture™

With a fully programmable data path, and open application programming interfaces (APIs), the Overture 6500 forms a foundation resource element of Ensemble OSA. Ensemble OSA creates an environment for rapid service innovation, reduced operational complexity, and lower costs through automation. Embracing the principles of software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV), service providers are able to maximize operational efficiencies and introduce new revenue-generating services faster and easier than ever before.
