DUBLIN, Feb. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Emerald Networks, a new-build network submarine cable system that will connect North America to Europe and Iceland, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Vodafone in Iceland (Fjarskipti hf.) to purchase capacity on its system known as “Emerald Express”. Representatives of the two companies are expected to sign contracts within the next 45 days.
The Emerald Express cable system is the most advanced ‘next generation’ undersea telecommunications network ever constructed offering low-latency and utilizing superior coherent digital technology. The cable is based on an open network architecture platform that is agnostic and enables upgrades with a range of new technologies.
The Emerald Express connection to Iceland will enable competition on the telecommunications market between Iceland and Europe where monopoly has prevailed historically. The system is scheduled to be ready for service by 3Q 2014. Its landing station in Iceland will be in the vicinity of the Grindavik municipality and, consequently, Emerald Networks will construct an extensive fiber optic network on the Reykjanes peninsula.
Access to the Emerald Express will provide a foundation for secure and reliable high-speed data connections between Iceland,Europe and the United States. The cable between New York and London via Ireland, will have a capacity of 40.000 Gbs, while the branch connection between Iceland and the two continents will have a capacity of 10.000 Gbs in each direction.
