Saddleback Leverages Calix E7-20 to Tap into Growing Business Services Market

Calix portfolio enables network transformation that draws new businesses to Scottsdale, Arizona network

PETALUMA, CA – August 13, 2012 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX, news, filings) today announced that Saddleback Communications (Saddleback), a Scottsdale, Arizona based incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC), has added the Ethernet eXtensible Architecture (EXA) Powered Calix E7-20 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) to its network to serve businesses and residents across the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community with point-to-point gigabit Ethernet. Serving a 85 square-mile area comprised of both urban and rural environments, Saddleback Communications also relies on the Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP), E7-2 ESAP, and 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) to support its mixed network of both fiber and copper technologies. With the assistance of the Calix Unified Access portfolio, Saddleback Communications has transformed its serving area in the past 12 years from a community with no broadband service and only 75 percent wireline voice coverage to a service area with 100 percent coverage for ultra high-speed data and voice services.

“Our community has blossomed in the past several years, as we have introduced DSL, and then fiber, to the area which has attracted a number of businesses, including spring training baseball stadiums, large corporate offices for national brands, and the local casino,” said Shane Gregory, director of operations for Saddleback Communications. “We have partnered with Calix throughout this network transformation, which has helped us keep up with the latest technologies and become more operationally efficient. As we introduce the E7-20 into our network, the platform’s flexibility will allow us to roll out a wide variety of new services over fiber, while still giving us capacity to continue to grow well into the future.”

While Saddleback Communications serves over 3,000 residential access lines, the service provider also supports more than 350 business customers, including several global and national enterprises. With a substantial growth in its business customer base, Saddleback Communications conducted a complete network overhaul five years ago, replacing its entire outside plant infrastructure, from the central office through the customer premises. The service provider has continued to extend the reach of its fiber access network throughout this process first with the C7, then with the Calix E7-2, and now with the E7-20. Moving forward, Saddleback Communications will also continue to bring point-to-point gigabit Ethernet into residential areas, which range in geography from suburban neighborhoods to rural ranches and farms.

“At Calix, we continue to build access innovations optimized for service providers to address the specific needs of their business customers,” said John Colvin, Calix senior vice president of North American sales and marketing. “Specialized business services are a huge potential source of revenues for our service provider customers across the country. Companies like Saddleback Communications, who are committed to delivering targeted services and packages for their business subscribers also drive economic development opportunities to their communities by attracting new businesses to the area, while also bringing in these new revenue streams.”
