London Internet Exchange Selects Juniper Networks PTX Series for its Network Supercore

Network Exchange’s Members Gear Up for Continued Explosive Digital and Mobile Demand to Ensure Service Quality and User Experience

LONDON AND SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 10, 2012 – The London Internet Exchange (LINX) and Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR, news, filings), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that LINX, a mutually-owned membership association for operators of Internet Protocol networks and one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges, has selected the Juniper Networks® PTX Series Packet Transport Switch for its production network as part of an infrastructure initiative engineered to support the traffic levels resulting from ongoing growth of digital content and the mobile Internet. The deployment, which went live in May, will be the second phase of a project announced by LINX in October 2011 to create a new network designed to meet current and future levels of customer demand for online activity.
News Highlights
  • The PTX5000 Packet Transport Switch will be at the heart of a robust network used by over 400 networks, including service providers and content owners from 50 countries, providing data, video and voice connectivity to hundreds of millions of customers using mobile and fixed connections. A full list of networks is available at www.linx.net/about/memberlist.
  • Huge levels of increased network traffic in support of live, digitally-enabled events accessed by mobile devices require a robust and highly scalable transport network – with its industry-leading total system capacity of 8 Tbps, the PTX5000 Packet Transport Switch supports an unmatched density of high-speed interfaces within a single chassis to support this level of simultaneous demand.
  • Based on an HDTV stream running at 25 Mbps, the PTX5000 is able to forward 2,500 hours of original TV broadcast coverage in less than one minute.
  • LINX’s infrastructure provides connectivity for high-profile events streamed online, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, The Euro 2012 soccer championships, The Wimbledon Championships, and The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in addition to everyday rich content upload and download demand.
  • LINX’s 10 Points of Presence (PoPs) across London are connected by Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, the first phase of LINX’s new network deployment which went live in late 2011.
  • The PTX Series and MX Series run on Juniper’s Junos® operating system, ensuring that LINX’s network platform is streamlined, cost-effective and easy to maintain.
  • LINX membersinclude traditional service providers such as BT, Deutsche Telekom and AT&T, content providers such as the BBC and Google, as well as application providers, including Microsoft.
  • The implementation is being carried out by Juniper’s partner Telindus Ltd.

Supporting Quotes

“The various high-profile events in London this summer, including The Wimbledon Championships and the Games, will be an excellent showcase for the new network, underpinning broadcast, communications and social media around the event. Generally, service providers are faced with exponential growth in demand, driven by user expectation of ubiquitous, high-quality data. The PTX Series is a uniquely innovative solution for the network’s supercore, which will enable us to provide scalable, reliable capacity in support of our members’ business models so they can in turn provide the best possible user experience for the future.”
  • John Souter, CEO, LINX
“With the PTX Series, Juniper delivers industry-defining standards of scale, reliability and automation in the supercore, but with optimized power and space consumption and lower total cost of ownership. At a time when network resources are under pressure yet customer expectations are high, LINX is providing its members with the performance, low latency, control and cost-effectiveness they require to achieve that balance.”
  • Sean Dolan, senior vice president EMEA, Juniper Networks
