Alcatel-Lucent helps Telekom Srpske improve broadband experience for customers in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Alcatel-Lucent efficiently and cost-effectively upgraded Telekom Srpske’s optical transmission network to 100G speeds to meet exploding demand for high-bandwidth services

Paris, May 18, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Telekom Srpske, the largest communications service providers in Bosnia-Herzegovina and part of Telekom Srbija Group, have successfully deployed the country’s first 100G high-speed optical transmission network, helping Telekom Srpske meet the ever-increasing demand for higher-quality and cost-efficient broadband and video services.

The adoption of smartphones and tablet devices, together with video, gaming, social networking and other broadband services are driving up the volume of data being carried by mobile networks today. Alcatel-Lucent’s 100G solution which Telekom Srpske deployed is designed to address the need to deliver more and more bandwidth while keeping costs in check. Because it can be deployed on its existing optical infrastructure, Telekom Srpske is able to support 100G capacity through a relatively simple, quick and cost effective in-service network upgrade.

The 100G optical coherent technology takes advantage of unique Bell Labs silicon innovations to support data speeds of 100 gigabits-per-second on each of the 80 wavelengths of an optical fiber. This represents a significant boost in network capacity and performance.

Predrag Culibrk, CEO, Telekom Srpske, said: “To grow our business in line with the market demand for communications services, we need to cost-efficiently increase the capacity and throughput of our key backbone routes. Proactive investments in the development of our optical transport network will improve its performance and flexibility and enable us to address the rapid growth in demand for high speed data transmission.”

Emil Visloguzov, Head of Alcatel-Lucent’s business in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, said: “Alcatel-Lucent is continuously introducing innovations that enable operators to benefit from investments they have already made. The deployment of our 100G optical coherent technology with Telekom Srpske is a clear example of this approach and it perfectly fits Telekom Srpske’s goal to increase its backbone network capacity while minimizing cost per bit of transmitted data. Alcatel-Lucent, which led the way in the introduction of 100G, remains the only vendor delivering this level of speed and capacity on existing networks.”

About Alcatel-Lucent’s technology solution for Telekom Srpske

Under the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will supply Telekom Srpske with its 100G coherent optical solution including the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and the 1626 Light Manager (LM). The 1830 PSS offers exceptional capacity and performance for the transport of very large amounts of data over long distances, and brings together optical transport network (OTN) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology onto a single platform, which simplifies operations and cuts costs. With the 1830 PSS and 1626 LM, Telekom Srpske will be able to support a mixture of 10G, 40G and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means it can reuse its existing optical infrastructure and then upgrade and expand capacity on the network as needed to meet growing service demand. Alcatel-Lucent also provided full integration and deployment services along with design, installation and testing, network operations and project management.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS and 1626 LM are key elements of the Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ (HLN), which is designed to cut transport costs and dramatically reduce operational complexity in core networks.
