Xtera Further Demonstrates the Superiority of 100G + Raman Amplification Combination for High-Capacity Networks

DALLAS, TEXAS – (January 16, 2012) – Xtera Communications, Inc., a leading global provider of optical and IP networking solutions, today announces a new demonstration of 100G coherent and Raman technologies to increase the capacity and reach of long-haul optical networks.  The demonstration was based on the successful transmission of 26 channels at 100G each with coherent detection, digital signal processing, and soft-decision forward error correction technologies, all on a 424-km long unrepeatered link with optical attenuation of 74.2 dB.  This result exceeds the unrepeatered transmission of 8 x 100G over a loss in excess of 76 dB previously reported by Xtera.

Unrepeatered transmission results are an easy and very direct way to gauge the performance of various optical transport technologies for diverse optical networks implementations.  The industry leading metric of 2.6 Tb/s over an unrepeatered fiber attenuation of 74 dB as offered by Xtera’s 100G and Raman technologies is a further demonstration of the high-end performance of Raman optical amplification for 100G networks in other link configurations, including:

·        Up to 3,000-km unregenerated transmission distance with in-line amplifiers uniformly spaced apart;

·        Insertion of long spans within an all-optical path (e.g. 250-km, 60-dB span in an all-optical route exceeding 1,300 km already deployed by Xtera in an N x 100G network);

·        Longest all-optical path of 2,400 km engineered and deployed by Xtera in an N x 100G network.

Distance and capacity improvements result from the better noise performance of Raman amplification combined with the higher coding gain provided by soft-decision forward error correction at the interface card level.  Additionally, Raman optical amplification makes possible a precise and optimum control of the per channel profile along the optical path in order to limit the amount of nonlinear effects and consequently extend the reach.

This new demonstration unambiguously re-affirms the unique value of 100G and Raman amplification combination as offered by Xtera’s Nu-Wave Optima platform to effectively provide the highest capacity in the industry for terrestrial backbone networks and unrepeatered links.

“Beyond unrivalled reach performance, Raman optical amplification offers wide optical bandwidth that cannot be matched by traditional transmission systems based on Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA),” said Herve Fevrier, EVP & COO, Xtera Communications.  “As a result, using our high-performance common line equipment and our current 100G technology, Xtera can offer 15-Tb/s line capacity today.”
