Telecom Italia and Juniper Networks Win Award for IPv6 Migration Innovation

Project Takes Global Telecoms Business Award in IP Transformation Innovation Category

LONDON, August 1, 2011 — Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR, news, filings) and Telecom Italia today announced that they received Global Telecoms Business’ IP Transformation award for their IPv4 Depletion & IPv6 Migration joint project. The project was designed to manage the parallel tracks of IPv4 and IPv6 seamlessly within a single architecture. The award was presented at the recent Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation awards ceremony in London.

Via the introduction of the Dual Stack Lite (DS-Lite) approach, Telecom Italia and Juniper Networks expanded the extent and capabilities of the Internet by delivering significant advantages in performance, security and features. As billions of IPv4 nodes already exist and directly upgrading every node to IPv6 at the same time is not feasible, transition from IPv4 and coexistence with IPv6 needs to occur in a gradual and collaborative way by upgrading the nodes independently and without disruption to other nodes.

Telecom Italia has been carefully planning for IPv4 address depletion by supporting the development of IPv6 and actively contributing to the definition of smooth address coexistence and transition paths. Recently, Telecom Italia performed several trials to assess specific solutions for its business and residential customers in order to enable the advantages offered by the new protocol while managing to avoid service disruptions.

Telecom Italia and Juniper Networks’ joint award demonstrates that a comprehensive solution can lead service providers to manage the rapidly depleting supply of IPv4 addresses and simultaneously execute an innovative IPv6 migration strategy.

In recent years, Juniper Networks and Telecom Italia have been working together to define the strategy for the IPv6 introduction to the network. Due to significant growth in developing advanced technologies to meet market needs, Telecom Italia and Juniper Networks have been recognized with the Global Telecoms award for the new way to solve a complex interoperability issue with the introduction of IPv6.

Juniper Networks was the first router vendor to support IPv6 lookups and forwarding in its hardware, including the Juniper Networks® T Series Core Routers, Juniper Networks M Series Multiservice Edge Routers and Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, which Juniper Networks utilized to support IPv6 addresses on its web site during the test period. The T Series, M Series and MX Series family all support major facets of IPv4-to-IPv6 transition and coexistence technologies, such as DS Lite and NAT44/NAT 44(4), and are powered by the proven reliability of Juniper Networks Junos® operating system.

The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards are designed to recognize innovative projects involving telecoms operators and service providers around the world, in association with their vendors and suppliers.
