Xtera Comunications Demonstrates 100G Upgrade Path for Long Unrepeatered Networks

June 21, 2011

DALLAS, TEXAS – (June 14, 2011) – Xtera Communications, Inc., a leading global provider of optical and IP networking solutions, today announces the successful demonstration of Raman + 100G coherent technologies to double the capacity of long unrepeatered links. The successful demonstration re-affirms Xtera as the industry leader of long reach, high-capacity unrepeatered systems. Raman + 100G coherent is an attractive and effective solution to provide the highest capacity in the industry for new networks or to provide significant capacity upgrades on unrepeatered submarine links.

Network providers know from experience that using higher bit rates to increase capacity often significantly shortens the transmission distance that can be bridged before regeneration is required. However, Xtera Communications combines the performance of Raman amplification and coherent detection to maximize capacity and distance.

In a recent trial, Xtera Communications used Raman amplification and 100G with soft decision forward error correction to transport 8 x 100 Gb/s over an unrepeatered span of 440 km with a loss in excess of 76 dB. Even over such a challenging link, the use of 100G effectively doubles the capacity over that achievable using 10 Gb/s.

Distance improvements result from the better OSNR performance of Raman amplification combined with the higher coding gain provided by soft decision forward error correction. During this same trial, the eight 100 Gb/s channels were interleaved with nine 10 Gb/s channels at 50GHz channel spacing demonstrating that 100 Gb/s channels can be deployed adjacent to existing 10 Gb/s channels. This offers carriers a graceful migration path to higher capacity systems.

“Xtera’s experience using all-Raman amplification to provide high-capacity transport over long unrepeatered distances is well known. Xtera has deployed 19 x 10 Gb/s over 395 km, the longest high capacity link to date. This demonstration shows that long links have an upgrade path to 100G,” said Herve Fevrier, EVP & COO, Xtera Communications.

With this trial, Xtera demonstrated that the capacity of long unrepeatered systems can be doubled using its patented all-Raman technology and the latest generation 100G interface. While long unrepeatered networks are common in the submarine market, they are also finding their way into terrestrial applications where the elimination of in-line amplifiers results in lower CapEx and simplified network operations.
