NEC and Juniper Networks Support Network Expansion for REANNZ
NEW ZEALAND, June 7, 2011 — Juniper Networks (NASDAQ:JNPR, news, filings) announced today the completion of a project with NEC and REANNZ (Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand Ltd) to extend the reach of KAREN (Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network) to more points of presence across New Zealand, making it easier for more organizations to connect to the research, education and innovation community.
KAREN provides reliable, high speed, high capacity connectivity across New Zealand through 23 points of presence. As an Elite Juniper partner, NEC will provide fourteen Juniper Networks® MX80 3D Universal Edge Routers to support the growth of the network, which links KAREN members to over 200 million advanced network users worldwide.
Following a robust procurement process, REANNZ selected the MX Series routers to support the development of large-scale applications and information that use high amounts of bandwidth and have strict demands on the network. REANNZ selected Juniper Networks for its performance, combined with the reduced management costs as a result of the single Junos® operating system.
“KAREN is a dedicated network, linking education, research and innovation organizations in New Zealand, and across the world. The network is unconstrained, allowing members to access as much information, tools, people and content as they require without usage-based charges. As such, we need a network that is highly scalable, highly available and provides an open platform for innovation. The MX Series deployment provides a scalable platform for our IP connectivity services as well delivering a high-performance network infrastructure that provides fast and reliable delivery of applications and information,” said Mark Cordy, deputy chief executive of REANNZ.
“KAREN’s members rely on the network’s high-bandwidth services, so it is absolutely critical these services deliver high performance and superior reliability. Our long-standing global relationship with NEC and the simplified architecture and reduced network operating costs provided by the Juniper Networks MX Series routing platform and Junos operating system mean KAREN enjoys lower latency, higher performance and lower TCO,” said Mike Marcellin, vice president of marketing and business strategy, Platform Systems Group at Juniper Networks.
“KAREN is a key enabler for research and education here in New Zealand and NEC is pleased to be able to leverage the strength of our global partnership with Juniper Networks to support the continued advancement of innovation in this country,” said Leonard Dench, general manager, NEC New Zealand Limited. “The high performance, openness and collaborative expectations of REANNZ and their members fit well with NEC and Juniper strengths, both locally and internationally. NEC believes this creates further opportunity for collaborative R&D bridging research, education and industry boundaries.”
