MALTA, May 10, 2011 – Cisco today announced that it has been chosen by Melita, a leading telecommunications operator in Malta, to usher in the roll-out of a next-generation cable Internet technology nationwide across all of Malta and Gozo. The implementation of the latest generation of DOCSIS 3.0® cable technology, including the Cisco® uBR10012 Universal Broadband Router, Cisco radio frequency gateways and high-speed cable modems, within an end-to-end solution from Cisco, will enable Melita to take broadband access in Malta to the next level and provide Internet connectivity speed that can reach up to 100 megabits per second to any Maltese business or home.
Melita’s next-generation network, called FibrePower, will be available across all households and businesses and will not be restricted to specific zones or require major infrastructural works. The FibrePower technology will help Melita pave the way for future enhancements in the way that fixed services are provided over its cable network. It will facilitate the convergence of data, voice and video over an Internet Protocol-based infrastructure.
This investment follows the infrastructural upgrades completed in December 2010, which addressed the ever-increasing demand for IP traffic. Through this upgrade Melita announced the doubling of the upload speeds for almost all its subscribers to satisfy the increasing demand for uploads to social networking sites, video and other similar applications.
