Level 3 and Strangeloop Team Up to Offer Superior Speed, Improved Performance for Websites

Level 3’s CDN Site Transformer Integrates Strangeloop’s Site Optimizer and Website Code Optimization Technology into Global CDN

BROOMFIELD, Colo., January 18, 2011

Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced its collaboration with Vancouver-based Strangeloop. The companies have integrated Strangeloop’s Site Optimizer and Website Code Optimization technology into Level 3’s global content delivery network (CDN). This newly available combination – the Level 3 CDN Site Transformer – will provide customers with a unique and powerful set of solutions for website and application delivery.

“The performance of a business’s website can make or break the customer experience,” said Mark Taylor, vice president of Content and Media at Level 3. “Level 3’s CDN services, combined with Strangeloop’s Site Optimizer, compound the benefits of performance optimization into simple packages that ultimately help us deliver quality content to our customers’ users faster than ever before.”

Websites are optimized for fast delivery in three ways, via network, delivery and code. For almost three years, Level 3 has been providing two layers of acceleration technology – caching and streaming, as well as compression and other site acceleration techniques (sometimes referred to as dynamic site acceleration) – which address network and delivery optimization. Since 2006, Strangeloop has offered transformation-based site acceleration solutions, which optimize site code to allow pages to be rendered more efficiently at the browser level.

With the Level 3 CDN Site Transformer, the combination of all three technology layers – network, delivery and code – can deliver up to a 30 percent performance improvement compared to an acceleration service with only two layers.

Part of what differentiates Level 3’s CDN Site Transformer is the strength of the standalone products and services from the two companies. Strangeloop’s Site Optimizer technology is specifically designed to simplify Web code optimization from a lengthy and complex coding process into an automated function that provides roundtrip reduction, rapid rendering, dynamic browser caching, as well as a host of other acceleration best practices. At the same time, with one of the world’s largest network backbones and a sophisticated content delivery platform, Level 3’s CDN services combine the reach, scalability and speed of a Tier 1 network to meet demand, even at peak traffic.

In today’s competitive online landscape, the importance of delivering a fast user experience is greater than ever.

“There is a proven relationship between page speed and key business metrics,” said Strangeloop President Joshua Bixby. “In recent years, there have been a number of studies showing that even incremental changes in page speed can have a dramatic effect on revenues, customer satisfaction and SEO ranking. We’ve seen this played out with companies who have used our product and, as a result, have increased sales by 13 percent and grown their organic search traffic by 10 percent.”

The Level 3 CDN Site Transformer is available in bundles that will give enterprise customers the appropriate blend of services for a mix of static and dynamic site content. The new bundles are available immediately. For more information on Level 3’s CDN capabilities, please visit www.level3.com/index.cfm?pageID=602.
