Volunteer Efforts Lead to $750 Contribution for the Center
PORTLAND, Maine (November 4, 2010) The Cancer Community Center (CCC) in South Portland recently received a $750 contribution from FairPoint Communications on behalf of employee Leslie Robert’s volunteer work for the organization. Roberts, who lives in Kennebunk, is senior manager of internal communications at FairPoint and has served on the board of directors of the CCC since 2009. She also serves on the Center’s executive committee and has participated in the Cancer Buddy Program since 2007.
Roberts secured the donation through the FairPoint Communications Volunteer Incentive Program that recognizes employees’ voluntary contribution of time and talent to nonprofit organizations where they live and work. Under the program, FairPoint employees can apply for a grant for the qualified organization when they have volunteered at least 50 hours during the year. FairPoint rewards them with a $750 check for the designated organization.
The CCC supports and promotes the well being of people living with cancer, their families and their friends by providing a warm and friendly place where they can come together to build social and emotional support as a complement to their regular medical care. The CCC offers a wide array of support and networking groups, lectures, workshops, and social events in a comfortable, caring setting.
“FairPoint’s program not only benefits local nonprofit organizations like the Cancer Community Center by way of the cash donation, but also through the many volunteer hours contributed by employees like Leslie Roberts,” said Michele Johns, the Center’s executive director. “It’s great that FairPoint encourages their employees to get involved in their communities and we appreciate the support through the incentive program.”
