Fortinet and Certes Join Cyan Blue Orbit SDN and NFV Ecosystem

Newest members integrate VNFs with Cyan’s Blue Planet for multi-vendor distributed NFV demonstration at Light Reading’s Big Telecom Event in June

Cyan (NYSE: CYNI), a leading provider of software-defined networking (SDN) and packet-optical solutions for network operators, today announced that Certes, the leader in multi-layer encryption solutions for high performance networks, and Fortinet, a global leader in high-performance network security, have joined Blue Orbit, an ecosystem of partners focused on delivering real-world, multi-vendor SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV) applications. In addition, in cooperation with these new Blue Orbit partners and existing Blue Orbit member, RAD, Cyan is participating in a CenturyLink-sponsored, official ETSI proof of concept (PoC) demonstration at the Light Reading Big Telecom Event in Chicago, Il, June 17 and 18, 2014.

“Interoperability in multi-vendor environments is critical for service providers deploying new infrastructure, especially as they place virtualized network functions, such as firewalls and encryption, across the network and close to the end-user at the edge,” said Joe Cumello, chief marketing officer, Cyan.  “We are pleased to welcome Certes and Fortinet to the Blue Orbit Ecosystem and further validate that SDN and distributed NFV can lessen the risk and accelerate the introduction of new services.”

Blue Orbit’s two new members are:

  • Fortinet – Fortinet is a global leader in high-performance network security. The company’s FortiGate next generation firewall features are delivered as virtualized network functions (VNFs) utilizing FortiGate VM appliances and virtual domains (VDOMs) to support dynamic routing protocols in both IPv4 and IPv6 (including BGP and OSPF) networks. In addition, FortiGate VMs provide separate security policies, enhanced levels of security and data segregation, including running VNFs at the customer premises for improved service delivery.
  • Certes Networks – Certes is the leader in solutions for encrypting and safeguarding data for any application moving over any network. Certes’ unique Virtual Certes Enforcement Point (vCEP) product is the industry’s premier solution for encrypting data traffic in a Network Function Virtualization deployment. Managed with drag-and-drop simplicity, vCEPs can be dynamically provisioned to create Certes’ CryptoFlow VPNs, fully meshed multi-point VPNs protecting data in physical, virtual and Cloud environments. CryptoFlow VPNs encrypt critical data for any application with automatically enforced policies and simplified control of encryption keys.

“As a leader in enterprise network security, our participation in Blue Orbit provides us with the unique opportunity to gain real-world insights from production environments to help us move forward in our goal of making network services more secure, agile, elastic and scalable,” said Ryan Potter, director of strategic alliances, Fortinet.

“Network Function Virtualization allows network operators to offer their customers the ability to configure meshed VPNs, set granular encryption policies for data traffic, and control encryption keys with a seamless, intuitive interface,” said Adam Boone, Chief Marketing Officer, Certes Networks. “By joining Blue Orbit, we’re pleased to help further validate and prove that enterprises can now completely protect mission-critical data, even as it moves across external provider networks.”

At Light Reading’s Big Telecom Event, Cyan and these new Blue Orbit members, along with RAD, an existing Blue Orbit member, will demonstrate multi-vendor distributed NFV. This CenturyLink-sponsored, official ETSI PoC will demonstrate the ability to deploy VNFs that don’t necessarily require the scale and elasticity available in a large-scale centralized network functions virtualization infrastructure (NFVI) or data center environments, and conversely, require highly specialized and often localized configuration and deployment. The ability to support the deployment of virtualized functions at the customer edge requires a Distributed NFV (D-NFV) architecture, which this PoC aims to demonstrate.

In June 2013, Cyan formed the Blue Orbit ecosystem to demonstrate interoperability among SDN and NFV solutions from an array of partners to lessen the risk network operators would otherwise face and accelerate the delivery of production SDN and NFV use cases. Blue Orbit partners provide applicable solution elements to Cyan’s California-based Blue Orbit Lab. From this facility, Cyan, Blue Orbit partners and customers are able to test and demonstrate the deploy-ability of SDN solutions.

Blue Orbit members include Accedian Networks, Arista, Boundary, Canonical, Certes, Connectem, Cyan, Embrane, Fortinet, Mellanox Technologies, Metaswitch Networks, Overture Networks, Pica8, RAD, Red Hat and Ryu.
