iBasis and Telecom Italia Sparkle Create First Multiservice IPX Provider-to-Provider Interconnection

ROME, Italy and BURLINGTON, Mass. — May 15, 2012 — iBasis, a KPN company, and TI  Sparkle, the international services arm of Telecom Italia Group, announce today  the implementation of a multiservice IPX Peering connection.  The new interconnection will support the exchange of voice, signaling and GRX traffic generated by and destined for network operators connected to each carriers’ IPX and will ensure end-to-end quality of service.

Driven by the GSMA, IPX offers a next-generation alternative to the public Internet. It provides the flexibility and efficiency of IP with the security and reliable quality associated with traditional TDM networks.  This is particularly significant for network operators as they transition to IP to capture efficiencies and support new services, such as LTE Roaming, voice over LTE, IP videoconferencing, and HD voice.

“IPX is strategically important for Sparkle as an innovative wholesale provider of voice and mobile data services,” said Riccardo Delleani, Chief Executive Officer of TI Sparkle. “We are pleased to be entering this partnership with iBasis, and to be able to combine our  complementary IP expertise and multiservice IPX offerings. We are directing voice and mobile data services traffic to the IPX now and look forward to continuing to utilize its ability to support additional services over a single peering interconnection in the future.”

TI Sparkle is a leader and pioneer in the VOIP business, running a full IP softswitch, multi-service network with Global MPLS capabilities since 2004.  As a co-founding member of the i3forum, TI Sparkle was one of the first international carriers to migrate its bilateral voice traffic to IP successfully, and one of the first service providers to offer an IPX solution which is both compliant with the guidelines of the i3Forum as well as the GSMA specifications to support existing and next generation IP- based services.

The iBasis IPX leverages the company’s more than 15 years of experience in IP innovation. It is a secure, managed IP interconnection service based on GSMA specifications.  It provides a reliable network for voice and mobile data services and a robust, interoperable platform for innovative IP-based services in the future.

“The demand for IPX interconnections is increasing as more and more network operators recognize its importance as an efficient multiservice platform for delivering high quality voice and mobile data services today and for new services in the near future, such as HD Voice and LTE Roaming and Signaling,” said Willem Offerhaus, iBasis CEO.
