XO Communications Announces New Teaming Agreement with Exalt Communications

  • Strengthens Carrier Wireless Access Service Offering for Wholesale Community

HERNDON, VA – March 23, 2011 – XO Communications (OTCBB: XOHO) today announced that it has entered into a teaming agreement with Exalt Communications, Inc., a manufacturer of next generation microwave backhaul systems, to jointly pursue business opportunities with telecommunications service providers and wireless carriers utilizing XO licensed Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) spectrum. This teaming agreement further enhances XO Communications’ carrier-grade broadband wireless access service offering for the wholesale market.

XO Carrier Wireless Access Service offers competitive alternative access for high-speed network services and provides an ideal solution for companies looking to expand the availability of their high-speed service offerings, as well as for those in need of an additional level of network redundancy and business continuity.

Under the agreement with Exalt, XO Communications will offer spectrum access for use with Exalt microwave backhaul systems developed specifically to XO Communications’ LMDS bands which include 28 GHz, 29 GHz, and 31 GHz frequencies.

For Exalt, electing to participate in this teaming agreement was an easy decision. “Together, we offer customers the unparalleled network assets of XO Communications with best-of-breed Exalt microwave backhaul systems. It’s a winning combination,” said Amir Zoufonoun, CEO of Exalt Communications.

“Microwave is a proven and necessary means for delivering high bandwidth Ethernet backhaul, not only to macro cells but micro and pico cells in high density urban areas,” said Ernie Ortega, president of XO Carrier Services. “XO’s Carrier Wireless Access Service, leveraging our licensed LMDS spectrum, is uniquely suited to address this market need due to the extensive reach, flexible channel size, smaller allowable antennas, and speed to market capabilities.”

As the nation’s largest holder of licensed Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) spectrum with coverage in 81 metropolitan markets across the United States, XO Communications is leveraging this wireless technology, where available, to extend the reach of its 19,000-mile nationwide fiber network. From wireless hubs deployed on its expansive fiber network, XO Communications can connect customer locations directly to its network via high-speed point-to-point wireless links at speeds from 100Mbps to 1Gbps to deliver a number of services including Ethernet, VPN and private line services, as well as provide network redundancy and business continuity solutions. Benefits of XO Carrier Wireless Access include:

  • High-Speed Network Access: Proven carrier–grade solution supporting Fast-E and Gig-E connectivity to locations without direct fiber access.
  • Cost-Effective & Affordable: Economical alternative to costly network builds or upgrades in areas where fiber access is limited or otherwise unavailable.
  • Business Continuity: Provides an additional level of network redundancy in the event of network outages caused by extreme weather conditions, fiber cuts, or other uncontrollable circumstances.
  • Backhaul Solution: Supports the rapidly growing backhaul network requirements of mobile wireless operators throughout the United States

“XO’s broadband wireless capabilities open the door to a wider array of options for high-speed network access, particularly in areas where there is limited fiber access or a lack of alternative providers,” added Ortega. “Carrier Wireless Access is one more service XO brings to the table in order to provide customers with cost-effective and innovative high-speed network service solutions.”
