Level 3 to Provide Network Support for MLB.com Media Archive

Level 3 to Provide High-Speed Internet, Colocation Services for MLB.com

BROOMFIELD, Colo., Jun 29, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced that it has been selected by MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, to deliver high-speed IP and colocation to support its network, media archive, as well as live and on-demand streaming capabilities.

The new services are an expansion of Level 3’s relationship with MLB.com, which started with the delivery of Vyvx video backhaul services for live-game streaming. Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Level 3 will provide the following services:

  • High-speed IP: Level 3’s high-speed IP, designed to seamlessly meet the demands of the largest consumers of bandwidth, will give MLB.com Internet access via two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports at Level 3’s edge servers.
  • Colocation suite: Level 3 will provide state-of-the-art secure hosting for MLB.com’s network infrastructure and media library, giving the organization direct access to Level 3’s international network.

“As a leader in providing live interactive sports content, MLB.com has considerable bandwidth and access needs,” said Peter Neill, senior vice president of Content Markets for Level 3. “The reach of the Level 3 network and the reliability of our colocation facilities meant we were able to provide a scalable solution that met their current demand while ensuring flexibility to meet increased demand in the future.”

“This was an extraordinarily complex undertaking, and we were truly impressed with Level 3’s flexible, consultative approach,” said Joe Choti, chief technology officer of MLB.com. “Level 3 rose to the challenges surrounding this project to quickly and efficiently deliver solutions for a mission-critical application that will help MLB.com provide the expansive Web and interactive content our fans want.”
