Expanded Portfolio Includes Storage Area Networking and Managed Dark Fiber Services
BROOMFIELD, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) today announced that it has enhanced its data center networking portfolio to help enterprise customers meet increasing data center connectivity requirements and better manage costs. The enhanced portfolio now includes storage area networking (SAN) fibre channel protocol, dark fiber and managed fiber solutions, offering enterprises a comprehensive suite of scalable network services that facilitate data management and storage.
As enterprises adopt virtualization and storage requirements continue to grow, there is increasing demand for bandwidth between corporate data centers. Many enterprises are also looking to better control communications expenses while increasing the agility and power of their IT services. With the addition of SAN protocol, dark fiber and managed fiber offerings, Level 3’s Data Center Networking Portfolio provides a complete package of reliable, scalable and economical solutions that enable enterprises to efficiently interconnect company facilities and data centers around the globe.
“Level 3 has solved a complex part of delivering virtualized IT services with their new native fibre channel solution. The ability to replicate and backup data in real time will enable both enterprise and service provider customers to fully leverage the operational and economic benefits of public and private cloud solutions,” said Ken Cheng, vice president of Service Provider Products for Brocade, a leading provider of data center, enterprise and service provider infrastructure solutions.
Level 3’s depth of experience in developing data center network designs for content, high-tech and financial services companies guided the enhancements to Level 3’s Data Center Networking Portfolio. Additionally, an independent survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, of over 230 mid market and large enterprise decision influencers indicated that nearly four out of five companies (78 percent) replicate data between data centers, underscoring the significant storage and bandwidth requirements necessary for enterprises today. Emphasizing these increasing demands, over one in five enterprise decision influencers (22 percent) said they were using 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) transport to connect their data centers. Level 3’s enhanced portfolio was designed with these findings in mind and offers a direct response to the mounting industry needs.
“Level 3 combines local service and a global reach over an advanced optical network, offering a full range of options for enterprises looking to improve their operational proficiency,” said Paul Savill, senior vice president of Transport and Infrastructure Services for Level 3. “By enhancing this portfolio of services, we are better equipped to serve our enterprise customers’ evolving needs and demonstrate our commitment to meet the increasing demand for comprehensive service solutions.”
Level 3’s Data Center Networking portfolio offers businesses fully managed optical networks, which enable synchronous and asynchronous data storage replication and mirroring. The additional services enhance an already robust portfolio that includes scalable route diversity, business continuity, cost control and experienced network consultants for strategic data center management.
Survey data reported here comes from an online survey that Harris Interactive conducted between Oct. 25, 2010 and Nov. 2, 2010, with 238 IT decision makers and influencers from medium to large enterprises. Data was not weighted.
