With DE-CIX’s DirectCLOUD service, ISPs and data centers can directly connect their end customers to several cloud service providers, bypassing the Internet. While many ISPs and data centers and their end customers use this for services like IaaS or Backup & Recovery, it is also possible to use it for DDoS protection.
Fast activation outside office hours
A use case that happened in March shows how fast the activation of a DirectCLOUD connection is possible. Myra Security, back then one of the first providers that joined DirectCLOUD offering technical services for ISPs with a strong focus on DDoS protection, contacted DE-CIX at 6.30pm, outside business hours. An end customer was facing a massive DDoS attack, and they had contacted their data center provider and decided to go for DDoS protection with Myra Security.
Stable direct connect – of critical importance in the case of DDoS attacks
The protection was first set up by Myra via GRE (Generic Route Encapsulation) within a few minutes and the attack was mitigated. Both parties then decided to use a more stable direct connect via DE-CIX. Within two hours, the DE-CIX DirectCLOUD VLAN was activated, the connection in the data center to the end customer was established, Myra Security cleaned the traffic, and the cleaned traffic was forwarded to the end customer.
The use case demonstrates how fast ISPs and data centers can connect their end customers to the available service providers via DirectCLOUD, bypassing the Internet. This can be of critical importance especially in the case of a DDoS attack.
