Sprint to Donate $1 Million in Product and Services to Help Keep City of Oakland Youth and Young Adults Connected

With My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, Company Commits 500 Mobile Hotspots with Service at Landmark Boys and Men of Color Career Summit in the Bay Area

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), July 21, 2016 – Sprint today will announce a donation of approximately $1 million in devices and service to help further the educational and employment opportunities for 500 City of Oakland, CA young adults as part of the Sprint for ConnectED program, and partnership with My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBKA) — a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving life outcomes for boys and men of color.

Executives from Sprint and MBKA will make the commitment to provide 500 4G LTE mobile hotspot devices each with four years of service to the City of Oakland at the “Invest in Youth: Pathways to Success Boys and Men of Color (BMoC) Career Summit.”

This donation will provide much-needed connectivity to support the learning and career advancement for area youth through the Oakland Promise program, which aims for every child in Oakland to graduate from high school with the expectations, resources, and skills to complete college and be successful in the career of his or her choice.

“In this increasingly digital world, at Sprint we believe that connectivity can play a critical role in transforming young people’s lives to achieve higher levels of education and better job opportunities,” said Suehyun Johan Chung, Sprint’s Northern California president. “We’re honored to be part of this tremendous summit and help 500 Bay Area young adults to complete their online homework to get better grades, apply for jobs or school opportunities that are only available online, and have access to the same online resources as their connected counterparts.”

Sprint employees will meet with hundreds of Bay Area youth at today’s landmark summit, spearheaded by MBKA. The event is open to all young adults in the area but will specifically focus on overcoming barriers to employment that disproportionately impact BMoCs between the ages of 18 to 29.
