When you hear the term “Internet of Things” or IoT – what comes to mind? Connections to cars, tablets, or fitness trackers? On April 9, we celebrate Internet of Things Day. It’s a time to discuss IoT and the impact it has on our lives.
IoT is more than connected devices. It describes an entire ecosystem that communicates with other objects and connects to the Internet. IoT will soon touch all of our lives. It’s a marriage of the physical and the virtual. Everyday objects we use are quickly becoming a part of a larger global network of things.
At the AT&T Foundry in Plano, Texas, IoT is at the heart of what we do. In 2013, we were the first connectivity provider to open an innovation center devoted to IoT. But our work in this space goes back even farther. In 2008, we formed a dedicated IoT team. Some of our latest AT&T Foundry IoT projects include:
- Flow Designer – A cloud-based solution for developers to build IoT applications quickly.
- TUMI Global Tracker – A device that helps to monitor and tracks luggage location.
- Permobil Wheelchair – A proof of concept that uses IoT sensors in the wheelchair to enable wheelchair users and stakeholders to wirelessly monitor for comfort, performance, maintenance and location.
- Ties into our future plans to open a sixth AT&T Foundry dedicated to connected health IoT.
- Smart Bin – With IoT set to transform cityscapes, Smart Bin remotely monitors trash bin levels.
- Schneider Electric – Proof of concept (PoC) uses IoT connectivity in electric charging stations.
The last two examples help demonstrate how our innovative IoT work contributes to not only smarter cities, but also the growing clean energy market. We’ve even ventured into coding for IoT and the world of connected robots. We recently invited some young ones in to the AT&T Foundry in Atlanta for an exciting day of learning. We helped kids learn how to code/program using robots and puzzles. It’s never too soon to start on the path to IoT. Check out the photos below.
