RENO, Nev. – June 5, 2015 – Nevada Broadband Networks (NBN) announced today that it had signed an agreement with Switch to provide a high-speed fiber connection between Reno and Las Vegas. This network connection represents the shortest distance and lowest latency route for connections between the Switch SUPERNAP in Las Vegas and the one that is currently under construction at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.
The Nevada Broadband Telemedicine Initiative network (NBTI) under construction is funded in part by the federal Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) grant awarded to the Nevada Hospital Association with additional funding provided by NBN as it constructs and operates this network.
The NBTI network will have a huge positive impact on many different areas of our state. After completion of this network, rural hospitals will be able to lower data transmission costs, connect to experts all over the world in real time, and securely share medical information with other Nevada healthcare facilities. The network will also act as a catalyst for economic development by strengthening Nevada’s businesses in the tourism, mining, and commercial fields, while also paving the way for the next generation of technology businesses via faster broadband connections. Network access will also be open for use by government agencies, non-profits and schools to better serve residents of Nevada.
John Clayton, Senior Vice President & General Manager at NBN stated that “the network will connect Reno and Las Vegas with over 500 miles of fiber and will be the shortest and fastest connection between the two cities available in the market. The network is designed to serve rural communities along the route with broadband services previously unavailable from any provider. With the connections at the Switch SUPERNAPS in Reno and Las Vegas, NBN will be able to connect to hundreds of other networks.”
