Forrester report details key components of a top-tier BYOD strategy and the leading vendors for device management
The use of consumer mobile devices in enterprise environments is increasing exponentially, and the need for corporate IT to support personal devices such as tablets and smartphones is expected to reach critical mass in the coming year, according to a recent Forrester Research report, “The Forrester Wave: Global BYOD Management Services, Q2 2014.”
The report identifies key Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) services requested by corporate IT to manage the influx of consumer devices in the enterprise, as well as the leading vendors offering device management solutions. Three trends driving corporate IT to change their BYOD requirements include:
- The number of [employees] that want to use personal mobile devices for work is increasing
- Corporate laptops and smartphones aren’t enough for perpetually online users
- Three-device requirements are getting too complex to manage
“Distributed user companies are stepping up their BYOD management efforts,” Forrester states. “Typically, they’ve turned inwards to corporate IT for help, placing increased demand on IT organizations to keep pace with all of the changing BYOD requirements. However, most organizations have small pilot BYOD programs. As these programs expand to include more platforms, devices, and applications, IT will struggle with having enough staff with the right skills to effectively support employees.”
Partnering for Success
As these challenges grow, more and more IT decision-makers are searching for third-party help to achieve, and retain the right balance between managing costs for hardware, software, connectivity and support. Businesses are looking for technology partners to provide appropriate controls of company assets and ensure responsible user behavior.
The top BYOD initiatives corporations are seeking to implement include:
- Device and information security
- Scalability
- Device and operating system diversity
- Geographic programs
To meet these goals, many enterprises are turning to third-party service providers, such as Verizon Enterprise Solutions, for help. As part of the report, Forrester examined the different mobile device management tools different service providers offer with BYOD capabilities. The analyst firm recognized Verizon as a “Leader” in the BYOD management services category and a strong choice for “large U.S.-based user organizations that are transitioning away from corporate-liable (CL) in favor of a hybrid CL-BYOD environment, including those with multinational operations.”
