Technology turned Pittsburgh into an innovative hub as local business leaders shared how machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions help drive innovation and bring economic growth to the community.
About 30 local business owners and professionals recently attended an interactive luncheon “Pittsburgh Productivity Event” hosted by Sprint at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The event featured four panelists sharing their successes using Sprint M2M solutions to help their businesses improve efficiency, become more sustainable, address regulatory concerns and increase revenue.
The panelists were Mike Zupon, Ward Trucking CIO; Frank Catroppa, CEO of Coast 2 Coast Communications; Mario Leone Jr., Director of Monaca Borough Manager and Regional Sustainability; and Dan Lapcevic, IT Manager at Family Hospice and Palliative Care.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger entertained the crowd as a special guest speaker. The 11-year NFL pro spoke about his charity work— the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, which he started in 2006 to make grants to local police and fire departments with an emphasis on K-9 units and service dogs.
“It’s a great way to give back to my hometown,” Roethlisberger said. “These service dogs will never pause, will never think twice and will always protect its partner. We’re honored to do our small part by providing them the appropriate protection that they deserve.”
Attendees also learned about how Sprint solutions can help transform business operations. From replacing paper forms with cost-saving electronic forms that can capture images and electronic signatures, scan bar codes and store customer data securely to using fleet management solutions to keep track of driver behavior and manage fuel costs and using video surveillance tools for real-time monitoring.
Leone Jr., who deployed Sprint M2M solutions for leak detection, has brought international attention to the organization’s sustainability efforts.
“Our sustainable initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the technology from Sprint and the diligent work of Sprint executives,” Leone Jr. said, “We’ve been recognized locally and internationally with different sustainability awards.
“The efficiency we gained is remarkable. We’ve reduced our water loss from 50 percent to 15 percent.”
Meeting healthcare regulations was another key point that drew audience interest. Panelist Lapcevic talked about how electronic forms have helped his hospice submit data quickly to Medicare and keep up with the fast-changing regulatory environment.
“Our clinicians want to cling to paper but we must move to electronic forms due to regulations,” Lapcevic said. “Sprint is making this an easy transition for the team.”
“This event provided a unique opportunity for local businesses looking to use collaboration and mobility tools to grow their companies,” said Tom Robertson, general business sales director at Sprint. “The energy in the room was palpable and it was wonderful to see the attendees connecting with each other.”
