SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (October 10, 2013) – FairPoint Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: FRP), a leading provider of advanced communications in northern New England, is joining with the Vermont Technology Alliance to sponsor the Girl Develop It Burlington booth at Vermont Tech Jam, October 17-18, at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington.
Girl Develop It is an international organization that provides affordable and accessible programs to women who want to learn software development through mentorship and hands-on instruction. The Burlington chapter is one of 15 in the United States. Its more than 300 members take classes and meet monthly for “code and coffee nights” at various locations in and around Burlington.
“There’s never been a more exciting time than now to learn how to code,” said Maureen McElaney, who started the Burlington chapter in March. “This is an amazing addition to BTV’s already vibrant tech community and thanks to FairPoint, I am thrilled to be a part of Tech Jam.”
The Vermont Technology Alliance put a call out to its members for support in helping nonprofits and startups focused on technology to participate at Tech Jam.
“Our efforts to promote Vermont’s entrepreneurial tech sector are key to the state’s future,” said Jeff Couture, executive director of Vermont Technology Alliance. “FairPoint stepped in to back Maureen and Girl Develop It, which has attracted a huge following in a very short amount of time. The time and talent of companies and people focused on Vermont’s technology sector is the main reason why Vermont is the fastest growing tech economy in the country.”
The Vermont Tech Jam is a two-day job fair and tech expo featuring dozens of Vermont’s fastest growing and most innovative companies and organizations all under one roof. It’s an opportunity to talk with recruiters, attend panel discussions and workshops and find out about educational opportunities available right here in Vermont.
