First P-ATO Granted for Globally Distributed Public Shared Cloud Services
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Akamai®Technologies, Inc. (AKAM), the leading cloud platform for helping enterprises provide secure, high‑performing user experiences on any device, anywhere, today reported achieving FedRAMPsm compliance as a Cloud Services Provider.
Akamai received a Provisional Authority to Operate (P-ATO) from the Joint Authorization Board (JAB) of the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP). This is the first JAB ATO granted to a globally distributed, publicly shared cloud services platform. Agencies can leverage Akamai cloud services directly, or use them to front end other FedRAMP-compliant data center solutions. This model offers a unique end-to-end FedRAMP compliant solution that is designed to help make it easier for the U.S. Government to use shared cloud services in support of federal computing initiatives.
FedRAMP is a U.S. government-wide program that standardizes the approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services. The JAB comprises the Chief Information Officers of the Departments of Defense (DoD) and Homeland Security (DHS) and the General Services Administration (GSA) who lead the management of the program with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
“The FedRAMP program is significant because it supports the Government’s cloud initiatives, leveraging commercially available cloud services without having to build government only clouds,” commented Tom Ruff, vice president, Public Sector, Akamai. “Achieving FedRAMP compliance allows public sector organizations to trust the Akamai Intelligent Platform ™ as the foundation for their cloud computing projects, while at the same time supporting their defense-in-depth strategies. As important, FedRAMP compliance is another example of Akamai’s commitment to serving the public sector and complements our DNSSEC, IPv6 and HIPAA compliant offerings, currently supporting nearly all Cabinet-level agencies.”
Knowledge Consulting Group (KCG), a FedRAMP-accredited third-party assessor, independently validated and verified that Akamai meets required FedRAMP moderate security controls. Akamai customer offerings rigorously assessed in the FedRAMP certification and accreditation included: Content Delivery, Secure Content Delivery, HD Streaming, NetStorage, Global Traffic Management (GTM), and Enhanced DNS. Furthermore, many of Akamai’s internal management systems are included in the P‑ATO.
“Having managed multiple certifications and accreditations over the years, FedRAMP just makes sense for both vendors and government agencies.” said Christine Schweickert, Akamai Program Manager assigned to FedRAMP. “The opportunity to have DoD, DHS, and GSA cooperatively review Akamai’s security posture brings tremendous value to the assessment and provides the government with increased confidence in the results. The rigor of this process far exceeded that of any ‘single agency’ accreditation.”
