The City of Albany is the 26th recipient of the Annual NYCOM Local Government Achievement Award for the ALLBANY Online Program. Peter Baynes, Executive Director of NYCOM, presented this award to Mayor Jennings in recognition of this private-public partnership that offers free services to residents of Albany.
The City has partnered with Tech Valley Communications, The Albany Public Library and NY Wired for Education and a coalition of community-based organizations to increase broadband access, usability, and utility for City residents. Through ALLBANY Online, residents can upgrade their job skills, get reading and digital literacy training, access the internet for free in designated areas of the City and obtain low cost, Wi-Fi enabled, refurbished desktop computers.
This program utilizes Community Technology Centers (CTC) located throughout the City including but not limited to: Albany’s Department of Youth and Workforce Services, several branches of the Albany Public Library, the Altamont Program and Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region. Digital literacy classes and Metrix learning orientation sessions are conducted at these CTC’s. Program participants learn and use an online platform that helps prospective employees strengthen their job skills and become more competitive in the workforce.
