100GE and 10GE Port Prices at AMS-IX drop by up to 50 Percent
Amsterdam, May 24, 2013 – AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) has decreased the prices of its 100GE (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GE customer ports substantially. Due to economies of scale, AMS-IX was able to reduce these port prices by 30 to 50 percent. The 100GE port prices went to 5,000 euros per month, while prices of 10GE ports reached an all-time low of 1,000 euros per month. Besides connecting the most networks and having a renowned technical reputation, the change in pricing also makes AMS-IX the world’s ‘best value for money’ Internet exchange.
Members of AMS-IX agreed upon this price reduction by approving the Long Term Commercial Strategy (LTCS) 2013-2016, a four-year outlook plan that includes AMS-IX pricing strategy for Amsterdam, at the 37th General Meeting on the 23rd of May.
“To stay valuable for existing and future customers it is important that AMS-IX grows,” says Job Witteman, CEO at AMS-IX. “As transit prices are decreasing as well, offering lower port prices is a good way to keep peering attractive, and ensure the continuity of the Internet exchange.”
Ziggo, the ISP using the highest capacity at AMS-IX, sees the port price reductions as a positive development. “AMS-IX’s infrastructure provides an important contribution to the digital economy in the Netherlands,” says Paul Hendriks, CTO at Ziggo. “We are seeing an internet traffic growth of around 50% on our backbone each year. To stay prepared for future growth we make use of multiple 10GE and 100GE ports. AMS-IX’s decision to lower the prices of 10GE and 100GE brings us and other connected networks therefore a considerable cost saving. Moreover, it will attract new Internet related companies from around the globe to this fast growing international hub and makes it easier for networks to increase their capacity and be prepared for future Internet growth.”
